In his own words

Our disgusting POTUS said while in the White House meeting with MBS, that “He (Khashoggi, an American citizen, journalist) was not liked by many people.” Our U.S. intelligence Organizations directly linked the brutal murder of Khashoggi to direct reports of MBS.

I cannot abide the slaughter of the many Venezuelan boaters by the fat orange blob, as it is the act of a barbarian. Now the ogre says that if the wrong people do not like you, you may deserve death by an assassin squad from Saudi Arabia. The bar for his depravity keeps lowering.

A recent LTE writer asked of Trump supporters, What would it take for you to abandon his support? The simple answer is the cake is baked and there is no lower limit. Remember what the Germans did during the Holocaust in Hitler’s name. Oh wait, that is fake news, in their rewritten history.

The West Bank

Not content with having laid waste to Gaza, Israel is now in the process of doing the same in the West Bank, but with a different strategy. It is allowing Israeli settlers who are residing in the West Bank illegally to attack Palestinian legal residents. Palestinians are being killed, and their businesses, farms and homes are being destroyed. The IDF is turning a “blind eye” to these criminal activities and is refusing to intervene to protect the Palestinians. Clearly, the IDF’s inaction is being directed by the Israeli government. Make no mistake, Israel’s strategic plan is to eventually incorporate both the West Bank and Gaza into Israel. Any Palestinians remaining will effectively be stateless with no civil rights. By not taking a forthright stand in opposition to these activities, the United States is effectively condoning them. Shame on us.

Do you have Social Security or healthcare?

Latest news minus Epstein is that 47% of Americans worry they can’t get healthcare. LTE today was about having to leave the country for care. My UnitedHealthcare has a lifetime limit for me of $30,000. The company’s 2023 net profits were $22.4 billion. My former insurer, 18 years ago, paid for my cancer care: half a million.

Jonas Goldberg wrote (Nov. 8) “socialism” is a fad. Really? Is Social Security, SNAP, Head Start, Medicare, Medicaid etc. fads? You “capitalists” out there: Want to get rid of Social Security? Republicans have wanted to since FDR was in office.

Only the US of the developed world doesn’t guarantee citizens healthcare. Why? Republicans. But they’re quite okay that taxpayers subsidize fossil-fuel companies a minimum of $17 billion annually. That isn’t Capitalism. It’s the Gilded Age again. Think what happened after that age. We’re not “capitalists” or “socialists.” We’re a country of the people, not the corporation. Which party stands for this?

Mercado District

As a tenant in the Monier Building and the owner of Petroglyphs in Tucson’s Mercado District, I feel compelled to respond to Tim Steller’s recent column regarding the Gadsden Company. While I cannot speak to the legal matters referenced, I can speak to my lived experience over the past six years as part of this community.

Gadsden has consistently supported my small business and many others as we work together toward a larger vision: a vibrant, community-based public market that reflects the culture, creativity, and diversity of Tucson. In every interaction, their commitment to that vision has been steady. They have encouraged collaboration, invested in local entrepreneurs, and helped shape a district that celebrates our sense of place.

Speculation and legal processes will unfold as they must. But on the ground, in the daily work of building a neighborhood rooted in local identity and opportunity, I have never seen Gadsden waver from its mission. My hope is that this broader context remains part of the conversation.

Where will the Acres residents live now?

Do we really need another bike path for the spandexed population here in Tucson, while the homeless are kicked out of one of their only places to live, losing their meager possessions in the process? Biking is nice, having a place to call home is even nicer.

Berating reporters

Why is it all of a sudden acceptable to berate news reporters who are asking reasonable questions? Simply because of someone’s presidential position, it is permitted. Since when is behavior such as this from the President acceptable?

Curious timing

I don’t question Arizona’s $60 million agreement with Casino Del Sol. The U of A needs to maximize every dollar in order to compete with the blue bloods — Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia, etc. I do wonder about the timing of the announcement given the numerous investigations of illegal gambling by both professional and amateur athletes.

Who’s the pig?

Donald Trump, angered by a female reporter’s question, leans forward aggressively and snaps “Quiet! Quiet, Piggy!” This one moment shows the true Trump and his attitude towards women. A crass, disgusting individual cut from a fetid, rotting cloth. His supporters should be so proud of him! Many say they don’t like Trump the person, but like his policies – a cop-out to excuse their approval of such a man. He’s like an angry six-year-old who cannot control his emotions or his mouth. If you are not flattering him or agreeing with him, watch out.

After this incredibly disrespectful retort, is there any doubt of his involvement with the Epstein scandal? We’ve all seen the endlessly shown video (no audio) of Trump pointing to girls and yukking it up with Epstein at some event. How about bringing in an expert in lip-reading so we can learn what Donald was telling Jeffrey that had him swooning with laughter? Donald Trump — “leader” of the free world, the shame of America.

How the world must view us

Mr. Trump welcomed Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman with a military flyover and welcome. The man who orchestrated the murder of Jamal Khashoggi at the consulate in Istanbul. Mr. Khashoggi was welcomed with a friendly bow as he entered the Saudi consulate and was never to be seen again. When asked about it today, the President of the United States, leader of the Free World, replied, “Things happen.”

Remember when Mr. Trump welcomed Mr. Putin in Alaska with a red carpet, military honors and a flyover and a promise to end the Ukraine war? Mr. Putin, who, if ever thrown out of Russia, hopefully will be tried by an International Tribunal, similar to the Nuremberg trials in 1945-46.

How many more criminals can we entertain? Is Kim Jong Un next, with a sleepover at the White House?

Vibrant Mercado District

My family and I run La Estrella Bakery, and we are very fortunate to be part of the momentum that Kira Dixon-Weinstein, her husband Adam and father Jerry have created. They are visionaries who have been able to keep the Mercado District vibrant by holding community events, celebrations, fundraisers, and other festivities that are dear to Tucson.

They provided a space for family by collaborating with businesses and organizations to feature events such as the Zoppe Family Circus, the Santa Cruz River Farmer’s Market, the Mercado Flea Market, and Spring and Holiday Bazaars to name a few. In addition, they have done everything they can to see the fruition of the businesses that have initiated with them. In 2020, as COVID unfolded, Kira and her family were personally communicating with each business to make sure we had everything we needed to survive. They kept us informed about grants, loans, etc. to help our businesses — they cared about each of us and the needs of our community.

Scrooge McDuck

Someone once said that the poor will always be with us, and our President, along with his axis of wealthy men, believe that is true, and wish to make sure it stays that way in America. They also are diligent in working to increase the numbers of the poor, the indigent, and desperate in this country.

As often noted, the wealthy and powerful can easily endure the suffering of others. Some of them may even enjoy being the cause of such distress. They have hammers for hearts.

As a youth, I loved the Donald Duck cartoons. I thought Scrooge McDuck was the oddest duck of them all. He was wealthy. He would sit atop his pile of money and not care about the trials of other ducks.

America has one too, Scrooge McTrump sitting on his pile.
