Israel and Iran continue their mutual attacks into the sixth day of conflict, as US President Donald Trump weighs whether the American military should become more involved in the conflict.
The US president held a meeting with his national security team on Tuesday night and sources say the US is warming to the idea of attacking Iranian nuclear facilities. Meanwhile, Israeli officials are waiting for Trump to make a decision and are hoping the US will step in.
Two U.S. officials told CNN that Trump has warmed to the idea of using U.S. military assets to attack Iran’s nuclear facilities. A senior Israeli official told CNN that Israel is waiting to learn whether Trump will help finish the job of dismantling Iran’s nuclear program.
US Vice President J.D. Vance defended the US president’s consistency on Iran policy. He said Trump “may decide he needs to take more action to end Iranian enrichment” but that he was “only interested in using the American military to achieve the goals of the American people”. He reiterated that Iran “cannot have a nuclear weapon”.
National Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard said she and Trump “are on the same page on Iran’s nuclear weapons timeline.” In March, she said the U.S. intelligence community “continues to assess that Iran has not built a nuclear weapon.” But Trump told reporters on Air Force One this morning that he believes Iran is “very close” to having such a weapon.
