Aikman: “I didn’t see (Parsons) getting traded as something that might occur.”
Dallas Cowboys legend Troy Aikman joined the Musers on Sportsradio 96.7 FM/1310 The Ticket (KTCK-AM) Thursday for his first weekly appearance of the 2025 season. Here are some highlights, edited for clarity:
Micah Parsons is a Green Bay Packer. How do you think that’s going to affect the Cowboys this year, and what do you expect to see starting tonight with Cowboys-Eagles?
Aikman: “Well, I do believe it weakens them for this year. And I know there’s been a lot of conversation about the trade. I didn’t anticipate that that would happen. I didn’t think that was on the table. And as most people have talked about, if it were, the Cowboys would have obviously benefited had it have happened much sooner. So, I think it weakens them in 2025. Does it strengthen them down the road? It’s hard to say. It’s hard to say who won that trade. You know, a lot of it depends on what Micah is able to do and what the Packers are able to do, and then also what the Cowboys do with those picks.
“I remember when we traded Herschel (Walker), and that seems to be a comparison that a lot of people are talking about is, you know, one, we had a lot more picks. … The real value comes in with whatever you might then do with those picks. And we obviously took advantage of the picks that we had back then, and it got us turned around in short order. Time will tell as to what that might look like there.

“I can assure you that Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles, when they saw that Micah was being traded, at least for Week 1, that was a positive in their minds, because a lot of the things that teams do when they come in, they’ve got to identify where he is, and then all the protection and everything goes towards him, and it just a domino effect. … So, I think it’s significant.
“It’s not something that I expected. I always thought that Micah would be playing (in Dallas), whether that was on his fifth-year option and then a franchise tag, or if they were to get him signed, but I didn’t see (Parsons) getting traded as something that might occur.”

On the Eagles’ ability to stay constantly competitive at a Super Bowl level…
Aikman: “In a lot of ways, they’ve kind of been the standard. There’s others as well, Kansas City, of course, but I think that Philadelphia has really done a remarkable job of just continuing to massage that roster and remain as talented and as competitive as anyone. …

“I am interested in seeing how Philadelphia handles and Jalen Hurts in the offense (handles) losing another offensive coordinator. It is pretty crazy that Jalen has played for so many different play-callers, both going back to college and then in the NFL, it’s rare. … So, I’m interested in how that might look, but there’s no doubt that Philadelphia (has) been amazing. They’re on a nice run, and Howie Roseman is a big reason in that, bringing in a lot of really good players.”

Impressions of Brian Schottenheimer ahead of his first Cowboys game as head coach…
Aikman: “I like Brian a lot. I’ve known him a long time prior to him coming to Dallas. I’ve obviously got great respect for the family and what his father was able to do. And I know his dad, it’s pretty clear to all Cowboys fans the impact that Marty, his father, had on him, and with that, I believe that Brian believes in being able to run the football much like his dad did, and being physical and all of that. … I think his messaging has been positive, which is great, but now the rubber meets the road. It’s just, you know, what happens tonight? What happens next week and the week after? And now it’s based on winning. …
“It doesn’t matter what you’ve been preaching to the media or what you’ve been saying to your team, you know (if) you get off to a slow start, not just tonight, but down the road, you can talk all you want, it’s hard to hold it together. And he knows this. I mean, he’s been in the business, but there’s a lot more to this job than just sound bites for the media. So, you know, we’ll see what it what it might look like for them. But I do like him. I do wish him well. I hope he has success. I think he’s given himself an opportunity to do so.”
