12th October 2025 – (Hong Kong) Transport Department has moved to officially quash online rumours suggesting an imminent expansion of the cross-border driving scheme that permits eligible local vehicles to travel into mainland China.
The clarification was issued on Sunday after a screenshot of a WhatsApp message circulated widely on social media, falsely claiming that the “Northbound Travel for Hong Kong Vehicles” scheme would soon be extended to include four additional border crossings beyond the currently authorised Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge.
A spokesman for the department firmly denied the speculation, stating that northbound travel under the scheme remains exclusively possible via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge at present. The spokesman also confirmed that the circulating misinformation had been referred to the police for appropriate follow-up action.
In an effort to prevent further public confusion, the spokesman provided clear guidance on how official updates would be communicated, noting, “If there are new arrangements of any cross-boundary driving schemes, the government will issue press releases as official announcements for the public’s information.”
