TOTALENERGIES is set to record a milestone of producing 70,000 barrels equivalent of oil per day from its Ubeta project in Nigeria. This represents a bold step in the company’s bid to support Nigeria’s energy goals with the Final Investment Decision, FID, on the Ubeta gas field project in the OML 58 onshore license in Nigeria, now officially in its execution phase.
“The 70,000 bpd from Ubeta is a major milestone,” said Matthieu Bouyer, country chair of TotalEnergies in Nigeria, during a high-level panel session on “Pragmatically Achieving Energy Abundance” at the Nigerian Oil and Gas Conference, NOG, Energy Week 2025 in Abuja on Wednesday, July 2.
Realnews, which covered the three-day conference that began from June 29 to July 3, reports that the project will deliver a plateau of around 70,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day, including condensates, a significant contribution to Nigeria’s gas development ambitions.
According to Bouyer, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) and NNPC Limited, through their well-appreciated continued support, have positioned TotalEnergies ahead.
The country chair also listed the company’s recent achievements to include a discovery in Ntokon two years ago, which is now progressing toward development, and the acquisition of additional new oil blocks in the past year.
On innovation and sustainability, Bouyer stressed TotalEnergies’ commitment to cleaner operations, saying, “We’re deploying more advanced technology than ever to extract more oil and gas with fewer emissions. For instance, we use drone-based AUSEA (Airborne Ultralight Spectrometer for Environmental Application) technology on our upstream operations to detect methane leaks. We are also in partnership with NNPC Limited on this initiative. We’re here to support Nigeria, and we’re doing it sustainably.”
He further explained TotalEnergies’ integrated approach to energy, from exploration to retail, and its active role in the domestic gas market, particularly through its stake in NLNG Train 7. He added that while TotalEnergies’ renewable energy footprint in Nigeria is still modest, it remains a growing area of focus.
His key message to the audience was that TotalEnergies is committed to Nigeria for the long term. Its exploration and production strategy centres around more energy, fewer emissions, which guides all its operations in Nigeria and aligns with the Nigerian government’s policies and programmes.
Earlier, during a technical seminar held alongside the main conference, Razaq Shuaib, manager of the JV Smart Room (Onshore), presented a paper titled:
“Enhancing Safety and Integrity of Oil and Gas Operational Assets through Asset Data Aggregation and Dynamic Monitoring of Safety and Environmental Critical Elements: A Case Study on TotalEnergies EP Offshore and Onshore Assets.”
Realnews, a media partner to the NOG Energy Week 2025 reports that the conference, for 24 years, served as an important avenue for connecting business and political leaders, driving conversations around energy security, decarbonization, policy innovation, and unlocking funding for energy sufficiency.
The 2025 edition of the NOG witnessed the largest turnout of participants and exhibitors, according to Odiri Umusu, director of DMG Events, who orgnanised the conference.
