Top careers and skills in demand across Oklahoma, according to OESC

The Oklahoma Employment Security Commission has launched a new unemployment claimant portal and released a list of the state’s fastest-growing careers and most in-demand job skills through 2032.

The Oklahoma Employment Security Commission (OESC) has launched a redesigned online portal for unemployment claimants, aiming to modernize a system that once relied on outdated, decades-old technology.

OESC Executive Director Trae Rahill said the new system represents “the largest technology release in agency history” and significantly improves how claims are processed. The revamped portal replaces a system that required about 90 minutes of staff-assisted input. The new version takes just 20 to 30 minutes and includes updated fraud detection and identity verification tools.

“The claimant portal is the latest release in our technology modernization roadmap,” Rahill said. “It’s layered with cutting-edge identity verification information” and improves efficiency for both staff and users.

As high school and college students prepare to head back to class, OESC released its list of the top five projected fastest-growing occupations in Oklahoma through 2032. The list is based on labor market analysis and input from economists at the agency.

At the top are information security analysts and data scientists, which reflects a broader statewide shift toward modernized, tech-driven industry practices. Rounding out the list are nurse practitioners, cooks, and wind turbine service technicians.

“There’s a lot of focus on integrating AI into workflows,” Rahill said, adding that higher education and career tech programs are adjusting to meet growing demand for data and tech-oriented roles.

In addition to high-growth careers, OESC also identified the five most in-demand workplace skills in Oklahoma. These include post-secondary education, critical thinking, effective communication, creative problem-solving, and emotional intelligence.

Rahill said that while technical knowledge is vital, employers are emphasizing soft skills more than ever.

“We hear a lot more from employers on emotional intelligence, having empathy and good communication skills,” he said. “Those are such important things that sometimes don’t come from education alone.”

The agency continues to focus on developing these attributes through its programs, aiming to shorten the time it takes for job seekers to make meaningful contributions in the workplace.
