Tokyo Joins Osaka, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Hokkaido, Okinawa As Japan Welcomes Over Forty Thousand Indian Visitors – Travel And Tour World

In May 2025, Japan reached a significant milestone in its tourism industry as the number of Indian visitors surpassed 40,000 for the first time in a single month. A total of 43,000 Indian travelers visited Japan, showcasing the growing popularity of the country among Indian tourists. This marks a remarkable 39.6% increase from the same period in 2024, reinforcing the strong travel ties between India and Japan.

The surge in tourism is largely attributed to Japan’s diverse offerings, ranging from its rich cultural heritage to its seasonal attractions, and a seamless travel experience. Popular destinations like Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Hokkaido, Hiroshima, and Okinawa have become must-visit spots for Indian travelers looking for both cultural immersion and scenic beauty.

One of the factors contributing to this spike in Indian visitors is the perfect timing of May. May is a widely regarded travel season for Indian tourists visiting Japan, as it aligns with India’s summer vacations and the end of Japan’s Golden Week (a major national holiday period). The aftermath of Golden Week means more availability of accommodations, a reduction in local travel congestion, and smoother tourist services for visitors. For Indian families, this period offers a convenient opportunity to travel without the added stress of overcrowded locations.

Moreover, May offers comfortable sightseeing weather, with clear skies and mild temperatures that make it an ideal time to explore Japan’s famous landmarks. The cooler climate also allows tourists to enjoy outdoor attractions like the serene Kiyomizu-dera Temple in Kyoto, the majestic Mt. Fuji, and the bustling streets of Shibuya in Tokyo in comfort.

The surge in Indian visitors to Japan is not just a one-off occurrence. From January to May 2025, approximately 142,400 Indian travelers visited Japan, marking a 39.6% increase compared to the same period in 2024, which saw 102,100 visitors. This consistent growth reflects an ongoing trend of increasing Indian interest in Japan’s unique offerings, fueled by successful promotional efforts, improved flight connectivity, and the development of easier visa processes.

This upswing aligns with Japan’s broader tourism objectives of making the country a top destination for international visitors, including travelers from India. The rising interest in Japan is also reflected in the number of direct flights from major Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, and Chennai to Tokyo and Osaka. Airlines such as Air India, Japan Airlines, All Nippon Airways (ANA), Singapore Airlines, Emirates, and Qatar Airways have strengthened their routes to Japan, making it more convenient for Indian tourists to explore the island nation.

The increasing number of Indian tourists can be attributed to the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO), particularly its Delhi office, which has been instrumental in promoting Japan as a tourist destination in India. The JNTO’s marketing campaigns, cultural exchange initiatives, and partnerships with Indian travel agencies have significantly raised awareness about Japan’s cultural heritage, cuisine, and natural beauty.

In recent years, JNTO has placed a strong emphasis on promoting Japan’s diverse tourism offerings, including traditional festivals, modern art exhibitions, culinary experiences, and outdoor adventures. These efforts have played a key role in attracting new segments of travelers, including families, young professionals, and solo travelers, all of whom are eager to explore the land of the rising sun.

As the momentum for travel between India and Japan continues to build, EXPO 2025 Osaka is set to become a major draw for Indian tourists in the coming years. EXPO 2025, a world expo taking place in the Kansai region of Japan, will celebrate innovation, culture, and sustainability. To enhance visitor engagement and promote regional travel, JNTO has launched an exciting Digital NFT Art Collection Campaign.

The campaign invites international travelers, including Indians, to collect location-based NFTs as they travel across various regions of Japan. These NFTs are linked to specific sightseeing spots, and by collecting them, visitors unlock exclusive digital content, such as interactive videos, historical facts, and local insights. The more locations travelers visit, the more digital rewards they can unlock, which could include limited-edition souvenirs and memorabilia tied to EXPO 2025.

The campaign, open to all travelers, aims to encourage deeper exploration of Japan’s lesser-known regions while promoting the immersive experience of collecting NFTs. This initiative highlights the growing intersection between technology and tourism, offering visitors a new way to interact with Japan’s rich cultural heritage.

The increase in Indian visitors is just the beginning. As Japan continues to expand its tourism infrastructure and introduce innovative campaigns like the Digital NFT Art Collection, Indian travelers are likely to become a significant part of the country’s tourism landscape in the years leading up to 2026 and beyond.

With new attractions and enhancements to existing ones — such as the National Museum of Nature and Science in Tokyo and the Hiroshima Peace Memorial — Japan will continue to offer diverse and enriching experiences for all visitors. Additionally, Japan’s commitment to promoting sustainable tourism, eco-friendly travel, and cultural preservation aligns with the evolving preferences of modern travelers from India, who are looking for more meaningful and responsible travel experiences.

Japan’s inbound tourism from India has reached new heights, with 43,000 Indian visitors in May 2025 alone. This growth reflects the rising popularity of Japan as a tourist destination and the effectiveness of promotional campaigns by JNTO. As travel connectivity improves and innovative digital experiences like the EXPO 2025 NFT Art Collection Campaign continue to captivate Indian tourists, Japan is poised to remain a top destination for travelers from India. With iconic landmarks like Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and Hokkaido, along with exciting new attractions, Japan offers an unforgettable travel experience for visitors of all ages.
