This snarky VPN is the best $3 I spend every month

From the first time Shaun laid eyes on a DOS computer, he’s been obsessed with tech to an unhealthy degree. After spending 4+ years in the Games Journalism field, it was time for him to take his passions to the next level. Working with companies such as Prima Games and The Escapist, Shaun decided it was time to let his true colors shine and spread his love, positivity, and excitement about the world of tech.

While tech may be a massive part of his daily life, Shaun has also been an avid Gamer since the mid-90s. From the first time he picked up an SNES controller, a lifelong hobby was born. Outside of the realm of gaming, he loves to spend time with his wife, building up his collection of Metal Gear Solid merchandise in his “Metal Geario Cabinet”, and squishing on his three adorable kitties.

Safeguarding yourself on the internet is a good idea, especially with the increasing number of scams, phishing websites, and the generalized nastiness spreading around it like wildfire. Encrypting your data and keeping your ISP out of your personal business is a great thing to do, and I’ve been spending less than a cup of coffee every month to make that happen.

Windscribe is something I’ve been subscribed to for quite some time at this point, and even though it’s quick to roast me through updates and press releases, it works extremely well and does exactly what I need. Plus, I can always add even more locations for just a few extra bucks.

What is a VPN, and should you have one? It’s good to know what you’re signing up for

A VPN, or virtual private network, encrypts your internet traffic. To explain it in the simplest terms possible, if you’re not using a VPN on a public Wi-Fi network, your information is just floating in the abyss for anyone with the technical knowledge to grab and use. A VPN works almost like a tunnel, with a direct, encrypted connection to your specific data point. This makes it much more difficult for people with bad intentions to snag your private information, including passwords, usernames, or anything else.

Plus, let’s say you’re bored with what Netflix has in your particular country. You can use a VPN to bypass regional restrictions and watch streaming platforms from other countries, all while encrypting your data, hiding your actual IP address, blocking ads, and protecting you from malware. If you ever go to a coffee shop and work from there, for example, I would strongly suggest connecting with a VPN before doing anything else.

Related After 10 years of owning a smart TV, I finally installed a VPN — and it changed everything

Installing a free VPN on a smart TV is a game-changer for Netflix and YouTube power users. But be warned: not everything will work as expected.

Posts 7 By Anwesha Roy Why did I choose Windscribe over others? I promise this isn’t an ad, but if they wanna sponsor me…

My main reason for signing up with Windscribe was the cost. I pay $3 per month for two specialized VPNs — one in the United States and one international. This way, I’m able to keep things secure, and if I’m curious to see what’s going on in another country, I can easily and quickly swap between the two spots. Plus, the speeds are absolutely fantastic, and I have no issue accessing apps like Netflix Japan on my smart TV that I upgraded with a Google TV Stick. It’s incredibly simple to do, and my speeds, regardless of where I connect, are more than ample.

For example, after testing my standard IP, my Chicago VPN, and a VPN in Japan, I was still pulling in anywhere from 910.69 Mbps to 554.16 Mbps, meaning I can browse at incredibly high speeds on any VPN I choose to connect to. If I want to add more locations, it’s only a dollar per spot, so I can pick and choose where I want a VPN for the month and build my plan from there. There are more traditional subscription models available, but I like to try different things as cheaply as possible. Plus, Windscribe doesn’t log anything outside of your total bandwidth, so you can feel safe and secure using it.

R.O.B.E.R.T. is the only assistant I trust Blocking ads, malware, and all the other nasty things

Like every other internet user, I use a variety of ad-blocking software. From uBlock Origin to Pie, I’ve found that these extensions work wonders when I’m browsing nearly every site. But if I’m using a VPN on something like my Samsung Galaxy S23 FE or on my TV, I can’t install all of these different extensions. That’s why I’m thankful for R.O.B.E.R.T., my virtual “assistant” on Windscribe. Is it perfect? Not by any means, but even the free version of Windscribe offers blocking of malware and ads.

If you’re hoping to visit some of these sites, you can spoof your IP, whitelist specific websites in those categories, or just completely block them all from coming through. This could be a great option for parents who want to ensure that their kids aren’t getting onto sites they shouldn’t be visiting, and it also helps reduce the chance of a device getting infected with malicious software.

Windscribe Download Expand Collapse Windscribe is a little immature, and that may deter some Toilet humor and swear words aren’t for everyone

Maybe it’s the early 2000s edgelord that still lives deep within my soul, but I love the fact that Windscribe is quick to call me out in release notes and jab a little fun my way. It’s very funny to me, but other folks may find it obnoxious at best and incredibly stupid at worst. Windscribe is quick to throw out a few swear words or openly mock users, just like dbrand or Opera GX do on their social media pages.

If you decide to check it out and find this disheartening, I suggest pushing through. Windscribe is too good to ignore, even if it’s quick to call you stupid or something along those lines. I never thought I’d get cyberbullied by a program on my PC, but I guess the future is now.

Windscribe is easily my favorite VPN Cheap, effective, and in my opinion, extremely funny

I know that you can’t judge how good a program is by how funny it is, but I’ll be honest — that’s one of the main reasons why I signed up with Windscribe in the first place. Then, I was treated to one of the best VPN experiences I’ve had since discovering them years ago, and I’ve been a happy subscriber since 2018 at this point.

It doesn’t matter if I’m just browsing the web or looking to check out what’s trending in other countries; Windscribe has made it incredibly simple to do. Knowing that I’m secure for just a couple of bucks a month is a great feeling, and I’m always happy to save some money wherever possible.
