This Chillingly Bleak Western Episode Gave a Legendary Lawman His Most Brutal Kill

His Western short story, The Devil’s Left Hand, received the Spur Award for “Best Western Short Fiction” from the Western Writers of America in 2025. Michael currently resides in North Idaho with his growing family.

Nowadays, one wouldn’t think that a show like Gunsmoke ought to be considered terribly “dark” as far as dramas go. The popular Western program starred James Arness as Marshal Matt Dillon, a brave and noble lawman from Dodge City who always gets his man. It spoke on social issues as Matt protected the Old West from some of the worst outlaws out there, some a bit more brutal than others. In fact, one of the most chillingly brutal installments in the series came from one of the program’s earlier seasons, adapting an episode of the original radio series entitled “The Cabin,” which has since become a popular fan favorite.

“The Cabin” Pushes Marshal Matt Dillon To His Limits

Early on in Gunsmoke’s monumental 20-season run on CBS, the Western program could get seriously grim, especially when adapting select tales from the original radio program. Penned by John Meston, who is credited with co-creating the Western program, Season 3’s “The Cabin” is a powerful example of the harrowing despair that was prominent in the Old West. In its early days, the black-and-white Western only ran in half-hour installments, and this one sent Marshal Matt Dillon away from Dodge City and into the middle-of-nowhere during a blizzard. Upon stumbling into a snow-covered cabin, Matt discovers that it has been overrun by bandits who have killed the owner and taken his daughter, Belle (Patricia Barry). It isn’t just the winter storm that gives the audience chills here, as Belle’s tragic circumstances result in a climactic shoot-out between Matt and the two goons.

Claude Akins (who later returned in “Snap Decision,” among other episodes) and Harry Dean Stanton play expertly against Arness here as the gritty and grimy Hack and Alvy, who aren’t quite sure what to do with the marshal who has stumbled into their lap. When they do decide to kill him, Matt fights back, causing Hack to shoot his partner in crime as the light goes out. It’s here that we get what is perhaps the most brutal death in all of Gunsmoke, a death that we only see through quick cuts shrouded in shadow and clever sound work that evokes images of agony and pain as Belle listens in close. Due to the circumstances, everything happens so fast that it’s hard to keep everything straight. Using a pitchfork, Matt descends on Hack in a quick last-resort of self-defense as the villain cowers in fear. The stark contrast of the harsh shadows against the cabin wall and the swirling snowfall makes the action abundantly clear, and though it’s perhaps not quite so graphic as the famous pitchfork attack in John Wayne’s Big Jake, it’s certainly just as effective.

In the radio version of “The Cabin” (the 36th episode ever put to air), William Conrad’s depiction of Matt Dillon describes the events a bit differently. Rather than falling on Hack with all the towering strength of James Arness, the original iteration of the tale had the marshal lift the villain in the air, impaling him fiercely with the prongs. “And I got in under him with the fork and lifted him off his feet,” the radio hero narrates, “and he struggled for a moment like a speared fish and then went limp, and I let him fall.” While the radio version of “The Cabin” was a bit more hardcore than CBS’ on-screen depiction of the Gunsmoke classic, Arness’ determined performance conveys the marshal’s own struggles with his actions, even though he deems them both appropriate and necessary.

‘Gunsmoke’ Rarely Delved Into Graphic Violence, but “The Cabin” Came Close

The whole climax is quite disturbing considering, as Belle can only wait for the lawman inside, hoping against hope that her captors will be punished accordingly. The radio show reveals that Belle had been under Hack and Alvy’s thumb for a month by the time Matt appears, and traumatized by her experience, she struggles to see any hope in her future. There’s no doubt that “The Cabin” was one of the heaviest Gunsmoke episodes of its time. Its emphasis on frontier violence in many forms and the sobering reminder that, even after Belle is saved by Matt, she’s forever a changed woman, made this a tough note to end on. Still, “The Cabin” is widely regarded by fans as one of Gunsmoke’s finest hours, particularly for its ability to dive into these complicated subjects in a short span, going to reaches that network television rarely explored at the time.

In the end, “The Cabin” concludes with Belle’s wish that she could now become Matt’s woman, but the lawman kindly informs her that his job has kept him from such commitments. Unsure of her own place in the world, Belle asks Matt to leave her alone, and as he does so, the gritty Western tale ends on the cold sadness and gaping despair that violence brings. It’s a bit of a bleak note to finish such a powerful story on, especially since Gunsmoke later gained a reputation for producing endings that generally worked out. Nevertheless, it’s an excellent installment that speaks strongly to the clear-cut, tight scripts of the show’s early (and arguably superior) years. If you’re itching for some thought-provoking Western yarn, look no further than Gunsmoke’s third season with “The Cabin” — it won’t disappoint.
