The writer Alexei Tolstoy was called the count of the Soviet Union. A nobleman by birth, he went into exile, but could not live far from his native country. He returned, assumed new power, and became one of Stalin’s favorite writers.
Tolstoy’s name was especially loud during the Great Patriotic War. In honor of the 143rd anniversary of the writer’s birth, we tell you about his contribution to the Great Victory.
On the literary front
Since the summer of 1941, Tolstoy’s essays, his sketches about the heroes and the course of military operations, were published in the newspapers Krasnaya Zvezda, Pravda, Izvestia and published in separate pamphlets.
His article “Rodina” about the defense of Moscow supported the fighters at the front, and the writer’s phrase “Nothing! We will survive!” was printed on banners, repeated at rallies and meetings.
During the war years, Alexey Tolstoy wrote about 60 journalistic works. They were all about the heroism and spiritual strength of our soldiers.

Tolstoy’s Tank
In 1943, the writer received the Stalin Prize for the trilogy of novels “Walking through Torment”, which tell about the events of the First World War, the Civil War and the October Revolution. He asked for a monetary reward of 100 thousand rubles to be used for the construction of a tank. His request was fulfilled.
Work at the ChGK
Since 1943, Tolstoy worked as part of the extraordinary state commission to investigate the atrocities of the Nazi invaders. In addition to the writer, it included public and state figures whom Stalin trusted. For example, surgeon Nikolai Burdenko, pilot Valentina Grizodubova, historian Evgeny Tarle.
In total, the commission examined about 250,000 protocols with interviews of witnesses of Nazi crimes. People talked about torture, mass shootings, and the destruction of entire villages.
