The Hidden Charms of Trikala: Why You Need to Visit Before It Becomes Too Popular – Travel And Tour World

Trikala, a city in central Greece, has reported a significant decline in tourist traffic during the recent holiday season, with hotel occupancy rates dropping by up to 60% compared to the same period last year. This decrease in visitors has been primarily attributed to the ongoing farmer protests and, in particular, the prolonged closure of the E65 highway, which has hindered access to the region. Konstantinos Papapoulios, president of the Trikala Hoteliers Association, confirmed that these disruptions severely impacted the city’s tourism, confirming the negative expectations that had been voiced in the lead-up to the holidays.

The closure of the E65 highway, a major route connecting Trikala with other parts of the central and northern regions of Greece, was one of the key factors causing the tourism slowdown. The highway closure, resulting from agricultural protests over government policies affecting local farmers, has significantly disrupted travel to and from the city. This has led to fewer tourists being able to visit Trikala during what would typically be a busy period, such as the New Year and Christmas holidays.

Farmer protests have been a recurring issue in Greece over the past few months, particularly in rural areas where agriculture remains a major industry. While protests are common in many parts of the world, the closure of vital highways like the E65 can have a direct impact on local economies, especially those heavily dependent on tourism. Trikala, a town known for its historic sites, traditional Greek culture, and proximity to meteora, is a popular destination for both domestic and international visitors. However, the disruptions caused by the protests have led to a sharp decline in holiday bookings and tourist traffic.

In addition to the highway closure, the protests have created a sense of uncertainty among travelers, who may have feared further disruptions during their journey. As the protests continue to affect transportation routes across the country, tourism in Trikala has faced challenges that have not only impacted the hotel sector but also local businesses, which depend on the influx of tourists to stay afloat.

Despite the challenges posed by the protests, Trikala remains a noteworthy destination for tourists. The city is known for its rich history, cultural heritage, and proximity to some of Greece’s most famous natural and religious landmarks. Meteora, a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its monasteries perched on towering rock formations, is a short drive from Trikala, attracting visitors from around the world.

Trikala itself offers plenty to explore, including the Koursoum Mosque, Trikala Fortress, and the Asclepius Sanctuary, which draw both history lovers and culture seekers. Additionally, Trikala has gained attention for its efforts in smart city technology, offering a unique blend of modern amenities and traditional charm.

However, with limited access due to the highway closures, potential visitors have been deterred from making the trip to Trikala. The E65 highway, in particular, serves as a crucial artery for travelers heading from the north and central Greece, and the inability to easily access the region has kept many tourists away during the crucial holiday months.

The decline in tourism has prompted local authorities and the Trikala Hoteliers Association to seek solutions that will help restore visitor numbers. There have been calls for the government to address the issues surrounding the ongoing protests, especially in terms of infrastructure improvements and reliable transportation options for tourists. Tourism stakeholders have also emphasized the need for better communication with travelers about alternative routes and possible disruptions, as well as efforts to ensure that Trikala remains an appealing destination despite the setbacks.

In response to the challenges, the local tourism sector has also begun to shift its focus toward promoting off-peak travel. Trikala’s tourism board is working on initiatives to attract visitors during quieter months and target specific niche markets, such as cultural tourism, eco-tourism, and wellness retreats, which can continue to thrive even during periods of disruption.

As the 2026 tourism season approaches, there is hope that Trikala will bounce back from the recent tourism dip. Efforts to rebuild infrastructure, improve transportation access, and market the region to international and domestic tourists will play a key role in bringing visitors back. Additionally, Trikala’s unique blend of cultural, natural, and historic attractions continues to be a draw for those seeking a more authentic, off-the-beaten-path experience in Greece.

While the current protests have caused a temporary setback, Trikala’s potential as a tourism destination remains strong. As Greece’s tourism industry continues to recover and expand, Trikala’s role as a key stop on the tourist trail is likely to grow, supported by continued efforts to improve both accessibility and the visitor experience.

For travelers planning a trip to Trikala, it is essential to keep updated on local travel advisories, especially regarding any potential disruptions. As the region works to overcome the challenges posed by the protests, Trikala remains a captivating and historically rich destination for those looking to explore Greece’s less crowded but equally fascinating spots.
