SALISBURY — Earlier this week, Catawba College announced a new partnership with the HUB, a collaborative nonprofit center in downtown Salisbury.
Together, the two organizations are creating opportunities that reflect Catawba’s tagline, “Good Goes Far” by supporting local nonprofits while giving students hands-on learning experiences that prepare them to lead with purpose.
“At Catawba College, we are committed to ensuring that our students learn in ways that extend beyond the classroom,” said Dr. David Nelson, president of Catawba College and United Way Board Member. “This partnership with the HUB provides valuable opportunities for students to apply their knowledge in real-world settings while contributing to the important work of nonprofit organizations. Together, we are strengthening our community and advancing the well being of Rowan County.”
The HUB, located in the historic Oestreicher Building at 122 S. Main Street, is more than a shared workspace. It serves as a center for collaboration, learning and community growth. By pooling resources such as meeting rooms, training spaces, utilities and receptionist services, the HUB helps nonprofits cut costs, operate more efficiently and focus on serving the community. In bringing multiple nonprofits under one roof, the HUB fosters collaboration, innovation, and collective impact, while also contributing to the vitality of Salisbury’s city center.
Catawba College is establishing a Social Entrepreneurship Lab (SEL) within the HUB where students will play an active role in shaping the local ecosystem of social impact-orientated organizations. Students in the Ralph W. Ketner School of Business will gain practical experience through project-based learning opportunities, including student consulting with local organizations on marketing, strategic planning, business development and innovative nonprofit management practices. Students from the Center for the Environment will explore the intersection of sustainability and economic development in an urban setting. Catawba will host various workshops and innovation showcases uniting entrepreneurs, students and nonprofit organizations in the community.
“The Social Entrepreneurship Lab will turn ideas into action,” said Dr. Imran Chowdhury, dean of Catawba’s Ketner School of Business. “By working directly with social entrepreneurs and nonprofit leaders, students will learn how to design innovative and sustainable solutions, lead with integrity and contribute to lasting impact — locally, regionally and beyond.”
