1. Áras election
Although the presidential election technically still hasn’t started yet, we are finally beginning to see some momentum around it build.
In recent weeks, a number of candidates and political parties have declared their intentions and this week we had the shock news that front runner Mairead McGuinness was withdrawing from the race on health advice. That decision has blown the race wide open and raises questions about who Fine Gael will chose as her replacement and whether it will impact the approach taken by Sinn Féin and Fianna Fáil.
So from who’s in the running, to the polling date, and the finer print and election rules, here is everything we know about the 2025 race for the Áras so far.
2. Trump-Putin meeting
Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin made no breakthrough on ending the Ukraine war at their highly anticipated meeting in Alaska last night.
They have indicated they found areas of agreement and improved their relationship at the meeting but offered no news on a ceasefire.
After an abrupt ending to three hours of talks with aides, Trump and Putin spoke to media but took no questions from reporters, something highly unusual for Trump.
3. Gaza
The UN human rights office has said that at least 1,760 Palestinians had been killed while seeking aid in Gaza since late May, a jump of several hundred since its last published figure at the beginning of August.
UN-backed experts have warned of widespread famine unfolding in the territory, where Israel has drastically curtailed the amount of humanitarian aid it allows in.
4. Care homes
The operator of a number of private care homes for children with disabilities was given permission to open two new homes on the same day that a report detailed a number of breaches of standards at an existing site.

Inspectors at a care home for children with disabilities in April said Irish company Lotus Care Ltd was not compliant with a number of care standards and that development plans for residents were not properly completed.

6. Denmark
One person was killed and several others injured in Denmark on Friday in a collision between a train and a farm vehicle.
The accident happened near Bjerndrup, in the southwest of the country, according to a police statement.
7. Irish dancing
An increased presence of Irish dancing in the fashion world and pop culture has not translated into an elevated interest among young Irish people, a professional dancer has said.
As world tours continue to see success and dancers’ styles get pinched by designers at global catwalks, professional performers and competitors are seeing fewer gigs and are exploring a new-found freedom after the pandemic.
8. Hurricane Erin
A tropical storm has gained pace and become a hurricane as it picks up power over the Atlantic on its path towards the Caribbean.
Hurricane Erin is expected to bring heavy rain to the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico and potentially have knock-on effects on parts of the United States.
9. Jair Bolsonaro
A verdict and sentence in the coup trial against former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro will be delivered early next month, the country’s Supreme Court has announced.
The court said the five-justice panel that heard the right-wing leader’s case will deliver verdicts and sentences on the five counts against him from 2 to 12 September.
