Tether Treasury transferred 100 million USDT tokens to crypto exchange Bitfinex on the Ethereum blockchain earlier today, according to data from Whale Alert. The transfer has sparked speculation around a potential liquidity adjustment, although blockchain data suggests it was likely part of a routine chain swap.
Chain swaps are used to shift stablecoin liquidity between different blockchains. In this case, 100 million USDT was sent from Bitfinex back to Tether Treasury on the Tron network, while the same amount was issued to Bitfinex on Ethereum. The swap indicates a move to meet growing demand for USDT on Ethereum, where user activity and DeFi applications remain robust.
This transaction follows a series of large USDT movements in recent days. On June 27, 127 million USDT was transferred, and 148 million USDT was sent to an unknown wallet on June 25. On June 22, Tether minted 2 billion new USDT tokens, continuing a rapid expansion of its circulating supply. Additional minting events were also recorded on June 18.
Tether’s market cap has now reached $157 billion, according to CoinGecko, maintaining its position as the largest stablecoin in the market. While Ethereum remains a key network for USDT activity, Tron’s DeFi sector is also experiencing rapid growth, with on-chain liquidity deepening quickly, according to CryptoQuant.
These coordinated cross-chain operations reflect Tether’s efforts to optimize stablecoin availability across major blockchains as market dynamics evolve. As stablecoin demand grows and blockchain usage shifts, such liquidity rebalancing strategies are expected to continue.
