Tencent, the Chinese conglomerate that has its fingers in many pies in regards to the games industry, has been revealed by Game File’s Stephen Totilo as the “lead financial backer” for Wildlight Entertainment’s Highguard.
To be more specific, TiMI Studio Group, a subsidiary of Tencent Games that operates branches in regions including Montreal and Singapore, is the main outfit that is backing the developer. Totilo revealed that both Tencent and Wildlight have not provided any comment on the matter, any the studio never commented on the funding behind Highguard during past interviews.
The news of Tencent’s backing of Wildlight Entertainment comes in wake of Highguard’s official website no longer being available, and it’s unknown when it will come back online. Highguard itself isn’t in the best of positions right now, as despite a strong start of nearly 100,000 players at launch, its figures have dwindled to around the 1,500 – 2,000 mark.
Wildlight Entertainment also revealed earlier this month that it had suffered a number of layoffs, although said that a core team would remain in place to support Highguard.
