Taylor Swift gave fans some rare insight into what she’s like in real life as she appeared on Capital Radio this morning to promote her new album, The Life of a Showgirl.
Playing tracks from her 12th studio album on UK airwaves for the first time, the songstress was also given gifts by radio hosts Jordan North and Sian Welby – who by all accounts nailed it with their present choices.
The pair couldn’t contain their excitement to have Taylor on the show, as Sian said: “We need to say congratulations on the engagement – we haven’t seen you since that happened. And it would be very rude of us, since you’re the queen of gifts, for us not to give you a gift.”
Handing Taylor a posh looking gift bag that matched her orange sweater and had the initials T S and 12 to mark her 12th studio album, Taylor replied: “Oh that’s so sweet of you. It’s perfect.”
Opening it up, she told listeners there was a mint green inside jewellery box with a cat inside made from Travis’ birthstone – opal. In a reference to Taylor’s song Opalite, Sian explained: “It’s an Opalite cat.”
A slightly teary Taylor replied: “It’s the perfect present. It’s so cute. This is perfect. I’ll always remember this from getting to come over and talk to you guys and celebrate the album release. Every time I look at this. I’m going to put it in a very prominent place.”
Next up was Jordan’s gift to Taylor – a sourdough loaf. Her eyes lit up as she asked, ‘Did you bake?’ to which Jordan joked: “Yeah sure.”
Explaining why he chose that as his gift, Jordan told listeners: “I love the fact that you make sourdough for your friends for special occasions, and usually you give them cinnamon and raisins. Now I’ve got a friend of mine who makes sourdough to put in a little surprise for you.”
Reading off stickers that were placed on the packaging in a bread-themed play on words of her songs, Taylor gasped as she opened it up and said: “Oh my God. Eliza-bake Taylor is really good. Actually Doughmantic. Fantastic! Oh my God, The Fate of Doughphelia is so good. That is so sweet.”
Jordan then revealed the loaf had a very special British twist. “We made a Gregg’s sausage roll flavour.” And Taylor seemed impressed as she began sniffing the loaf and exclaimed: “Oh my God, this is fantastic. Look at this! This is great. This is going to be my lunch.”
“Now we’re all big Swifties,” Jordan continued, “But you went up in my estimation at the Eras tour when you organised a Greggs van to be backstage for all your crew and workers, because obviously, we love Greggs in the UK, so we’ve put a little surprise in the bake there.”
Speaking after the interview, Sian shrieked as she told listeners: “I don’t know how to digest what just happened. I’ve got no memory – but what I will say was there some epic moments.” Turning to a crew member in the studio, she asked: “Tell us what her team said just then.”
Asked what she would like to do with the gifts Sian and Jordan had just given her, they were told Taylor had said she’d like to keep them and her team asked if they could take them with them.
“She’s keeping the gifts!” Sian screamed as she continued: “Can we just say this was a team effort. We wanted to do it for you guys, the fans, because we know that she doesn’t do a lot of interviews. We had very limited time with her as well.” Jordan added: “We’ve just been told we were given an extra three or four minutes,” as Sian said: “This is honestly a highlight of my life.”
