BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday said that if BNP wins the next parliamentary election, the party’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman will become the country’s prime minister.

Mirza Fakhrul made this comment at the National Council of the Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB) on Saturday afternoon. Tarique Rahman joined the programme virtually from London, UK.

The national council of DAB, a pro-BNP doctors’ group, was held at the auditorium of Wills Little Flower School and College in Kakrail, Dhaka.

Mirza Fakhrul said, “Today, not only our acting chairman, but also our future leader and future prime minister is here. His wife, Zubaida Rahman, is also a well-known doctor. She graduated from here (Dhaka).”

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir spoke as a special guest at the event. He hinted that Tarique Rahman could become the Prime Minister if BNP wins the election.

Fakhrul shared that Dr Farid his close friend and his wife’s doctor, wants to set up a ‘centre of excellence’ for cancer treatment in Bangladesh but is unable to do so despite being an expert from the UK.

He asked for Tarique Rahman’s attention on the matter.

Fakhrul also said that Bangladesh’s drug industry, which exports globally, is now in crisis because of government policies.

He warned that some factories may have to close. He highlighted that Tarique Rahman’s 31-point plan gives important focus to the health sector.

Talking about a prosperous Bangladesh, Fakhrul said it is important not only to ensure democracy and voting rights but also the right to health, life, and food for all.

He thanked doctors who treated injured people during the anti-fascist movement, even when they were stopped or faced action. He said the nation would never forget their service and urged the government to ensure treatment for those injured in the July coup.

He also wished the DAB council success.

After the council session, voting for new DAB leadership started at 1:00 pm and will continue until 5:00pm.

There are 3,501 voters, and two panels ‘Aziz-Shakur’ and ‘Harun-Shakil’ are competing in the election.

The ‘Aziz-Shakur’ panel is led by Professor AKM Azizul Haque, who was DAB president from 2005 to 2011.

In this panel, Prof Abdus Shakur Khan is running for Secretary General. Dr Saif Uddin Nisar Ahmed Tushar is running for Senior Vice President.

Dr Touhid Ul Islam is running for Treasurer, Dr Abu Md. Ahsan Firoz is running for Senior Joint Secretary General.

The ‘Harun-Shakil’ panel is led by Prof Harun Al Rashid, who led DAB from 2019 to 2025.

In this panel, Dr Zahirul Islam Shakil is running for Secretary General.

Dr Abul Kenan is running for Senior Vice President. Dr Md Mehedi Hasan is running for Treasurer, Dr AKM Khalequzzaman Dipu is running for Senior Joint Secretary General.

Apart from these two panels, Dr Obaidul Kabir is also running for the post of President.

The council session was chaired by Ismail Zabihullah, a member of the BNP Chairperson’s advisory council and convener of the DAB council preparation committee.

Other speakers included Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, adviser to the BNP Chairperson, BNP Central Education Secretary and Bangladesh Open University (BOU) Vice-Chancellor Professor ABM Obaidul Islam.

The session was moderated by Prof Lutfur Rahman. It was addressed by Bijon Kanti Sarkar and Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, both members of the council preparation committee and the BNP Chairperson’s advisory council. The two presidential candidates Prof Azizul Haque and Prof Harun Al Rashid also spoke at the event.
