Clarifies past comments as entertainment, celebrates KOSPI’s historic surge
Syuka, an economics and current affairs YouTuber with 3.65 million subscribers, directly addressed controversies surrounding his past remarks about the “KOSPI 5,000” milestone. As the KOSPI index recently surged past the 5,000-point mark for the first time in history, criticism resurfaced due to the re-circulation of his earlier comments.
On the 29th, Syuka posted a lengthy statement on his YouTube channel’s bulletin board. He wrote, “Even though I should be used to it by now, it’s still not easy. I’ve often encountered cases where certain YouTube channels or individuals create edited videos, fabricate content, mock, criticize, and even hurl insults. But seeing it covered in the media is disheartening.”
He added, “Longtime viewers of ‘Syuka World’ or ‘Money Comics’ would know: Was I someone who mocked and criticized government policies, or someone who promoted and supported them? Did I encourage and hope for the KOSPI 5,000 milestone, or mock it?” He expressed frustration over the misrepresentation.
In a video titled “Samsung Electronics’ Market Cap Surpasses 1,000 Trillion Korean Won, KOSPI Blazing Rally” on the 27th, Syuka celebrated the KOSPI’s breakthrough, calling it “something unimaginable” and “a historic, crazy five months.” However, online communities re-circulated a clip from last year where he appeared on the ‘Money Comics’ YouTube channel and sarcastically praised President Lee Jae Myung’s “KOSPI 5,000” pledge.
Syuka explained that the re-circulated scene was part of an “entertainment segment,” stating, “Watching the full context makes it clear there was no mockery. However, people usually judge based on edited clips without watching the entire broadcast.”
He emphasized, “I aimed to celebrate and publicize good policies and achievements, while constructively criticizing issues. As a result, I’ve been criticized for being ‘left-leaning’ and ‘right-leaning’ equally. Many advised me to pick a side and speak only to allies. But I couldn’t do that because I believed myself to be a journalist.”
Syuka concluded, “It hurts to see articles contradicting my usual stance and face widespread criticism. Still, the KOSPI 5,000 milestone is truly remarkable — an achievement worthy of a hundred praises. I sincerely hope it climbs even higher in the future.”
