Two lifeboats were scrambled when fears were raised for a swimmer off Anglesey’s southeast coast. The person was “presumed missing” after a concerned member of the public found their car seemingly abandoned.
Coastguard Rescue Teams from Penmon and Bangor joined the shoreline search yesterday morning (Monday, July 21), along with officers from North Wales Police (NWP).
Moelfre RNLI volunteers launched their all-weather and inshore lifeboats and headed to Traeth Lleiniog, a sand and stone beach near Llangoed between Penmon and Beaumaris.
Popular with picnickers, the beach offers free parking, benches and stunning views across the water to the mountains of Eryri (Snowdonia). The Anglesey Coastal Path runs past the beach, where concerns have been voiced over the amount of erosion it’s been suffering.
As the missing man was known to be a regular swimmer at the beach, the alarm was raised when his car was spotted in the parking area for longer than usual. The caller reported there were no signs of the swimmer.
Moelfre RNLI said the call-out was de-escalated when police discovered what had happened. A spokesperson said: “While the search was ongoing, NWP managed to make contact with the car’s owner. Sign up now for the latest news on the North Wales Live Whatsapp community
“He informed the police the car had been experiencing ignition issues and that he had gone home to resolve the problem with the ignition key.
“The first informant’s vigilance and quick action in calling the coastguard is commendable.
“This shout will be recorded as a false alarm with good intent, highlighting the importance of public vigilance in such situations.”
Both lifeboats returned to Moelfre by 12.28pm and were prepared for their next call-outs. Get the best island stories from our Anglesey newsletter – sent every Friday
