Sugar Match introduces real-time three-player match-3 competition, combining skill-focused gameplay with blockchain-based token mechanics.
Sugar Gaming Studios has launched Sugar Match, a Web3 adaptation of the match-3 puzzle genre, on the Tezos Layer-2 blockchain Etherlink.
The game blends traditional match-3 mechanics with competitive real-time multiplayer play and a blockchain-based rewards system.
This release is the first in a planned five-game series by the studio, which has two decades of experience and a player base exceeding 60 million across previous titles.
Real-Time PvPvP and Skill-Based Gameplay
Unlike many blockchain games that focus on token collection or speculative trading, Sugar Match centers on skill-based gameplay.
The game’s primary mode is a three-player, real-time Player vs Player vs Player (PvPvP) format. Players compete across five timed puzzle rounds, starting each round on identical boards. They can use in-game boosters strategically to disrupt opponents, multiply their points, or defend against incoming attacks. At the end of each match, the highest-scoring player wins the reward pot.
This setup emphasizes strategy and reflexes over simple token accumulation, aligning the game more closely with mainstream puzzle titles than with early Web3 projects.
“We’ve created a competitive, skill-based experience that just happens to integrate blockchain in a transparent, player-first way,” said Nikolay Mitev, Co-Founder and CEO of Sugar Gaming Studios. “Our goal has always been to create games that are fun first, Web3 second – bringing the match-3 mechanics players love into Web3 with a unique competitive spin.”
The game uses two types of currency. The main in-game currency is gCNDY, which players can earn through gameplay. Another one, CNDY, is Sugarverse’s tradable token and is available on exchanges including MEXC, IguanaDEX, and Uniswap.
A dedicated swap portal allows players to convert gCNDY into CNDY, linking in-game progress with a token that has real-world market value.
Sugar Match ran a closed beta in January 2025, involving more than 10,000 players who completed over 1 million test games off-chain. Feedback from the beta informed the game’s real-time scoring, booster mechanics, and balance between competition and accessibility.
Etherlink Powers Blockchain Integration
Etherlink, the Layer-2 blockchain hosting the game, uses Tezos Smart Rollups. Its EVM compatibility, decentralized governance, and fraud-proof infrastructure allow real-time multiplayer interactions without the high fees or latency issues that have limited previous blockchain-based games.
Sugar Match is now available on iOS and Android. The CNDY token is actively traded, and in-game currency can be converted through the studio’s swap portal at swap.sugarverse.io.
Why This Matters?
Sugar Match shows that Web3 games can prioritize engaging, competitive gameplay while integrating blockchain technology transparently. This could signal a shift in the sector toward skill-based, sustainable gaming experiences rather than purely speculative token-based projects.
