Manchester United are once again in the mire after the sacking of Ruben Amorim, as they hunt for their 11th manager since the retirement of Alex Ferguson in 2013.
Amorim was fired by the club’s hierarchy after an explosive press conference at Elland Road at Sunday, which was reportedly preceded by an equally explosive behind-the-scenes meeting with the club’s directors.
The latest in a long line of contenders who have tried and failed to succeed Ferguson, Amorim looked perhaps the most frustrated of all.
Ferguson’s continued presence at Old Trafford in the near-13 years since his departure as manager is often questioned by pundits.
For many managers, the ominous image of the club’s greatest manager peering down from the directors’ box has ultimately been their death sentence as manager.
Though many ex-United players hold a certain amount of reverence for Ferguson, Roy Keane is certainly not one of those.
On Thursday, the Irishman made his feelings clear on Fergie’s continued presence at Manchester United, with a comment that had Daniel Sturridge fighting back laughter live on Sky.

Though they were on duty for Arsenal’s clash with Liverpool, it was only natural that Roy Keane, Gary Neville, and Daniel Sturridge would eventually discuss Manchester United, given this week’s bombshell news.
The trio reacted to Ruben Amorim’s sacking on Sky Sports, and pondered over who might be the next to take the poisoned chalice at Old Trafford.
Keane would break off and begin a rant about the broken structure at Manchester United, much of which will ring true for fans of the club.
However, it was his cutting drive-by dig at his old manager which had Daniel Sturridge cracking up.
What happens in these job interviews? I’m intrigued why they keep giving some people a job, what happens in the interview that they sit there and go…and then, 12 months, 14 months later, they say, ‘He’s not the guy for us.’ When you meet someone, look them in the eye.
You see who’s making the decisions at Man United. You still have [Alex] Ferguson and David Gill hanging around like a bad smell.
Who’s making the decisions? Ratcliffe? Wilcox? Who’s coming into this interview process, speaking to a manager…you want to sit and get a feel for someone, go ‘He’s the guy for us.’
Forget the CV – obviously, you want something on your CV, that you’ve won a trophy or you’ve been a manager a long time. But look someone in the eye and go, ‘Are you the man to get us places?’
The cut to the wider studio shot after Keane’s brutal dig at Fergie was priceless, with Daniel Sturridge visibly holding back laughter.
Keane and Ferguson are on infamously bad terms ever since the Corkonian’s abrupt departure from United in the winter of 2005.
With regard to who the next full-time Manchester United manager should be, Roy Keane would plump for current Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, saying the Englishman would be the perfect fit.
“I like him, I like what he’s doing,” Keane said of Howe.
“He’s managed a lot of games. When his teams are at it, they’ll play good football. I like what he’s done at Newcastle and Bournemouth.
