Student filmmakers are preparing for the premiere of what has been described as their “most ambitious project yet”. Film and TV students from Stockton Riverside college have made a feature-length regency period drama, which will be screened at the college’s theatre on Wednesday evening.
60 students took part in the filming, which spanned five weeks of work on location, at Preston Park Museum and Grounds. The crew included a director and producer – who needed to stay on set all the time. Others took positions as a costume and set designer, assistant director and marketing manager.
Creative make-up students supported the production. Double crews shared operative jobs in filming, lighting and sound. Their course lecturer Kane Smith wrote the script for the drama himself. He said, “There is no better experience for filmmakers to develop their skills, than actually working on set.
“This will almost certainly be the biggest shoot they will work on at this stage in their training”.
Smith oversaw night time shoots, which he says brought “a whole additional skill set” with them – “including complexity of planning, timings, continuity, lighting, working around the public, paperwork and the elements. It is a really valuable experience as challenges do come up and they must find ways to work around them, think on their feet, and learn from their mistakes.
“We are incredibly grateful to the team at Preston Park Museum for accommodating this opportunity.”
Editing of the student’s film “Suitors” – described as a “mammoth task in itself” – is now underway. The period drama will be screened at the Margaret Armstrong theatre, Stockton Riverside college, on Wednesday February 25. Doors open at 5pm and tickets are £5 (cash only) on the door.
Bookings can be reserved online at Suitors Premiere – 25.2.26.
