A North Yorkshire heritage railway is inviting people to step behind the scenes and get involved.
The North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) is calling on members of the public to explore volunteering opportunities and discover how they can support the heritage line at its New Volunteers Open Day.
The event will take place at Pickering Station in the Learning Centre Classroom, Platform 2, on Saturday, February 21, from 10am to 2pm.

Andy Woolley, head of people at the NYMR, said: “Our volunteers are the lifeblood of the NYMR, and we simply couldn’t do what we do without them.
“This Open Day is about opening our doors, sharing what goes on behind the scenes, and showing people just how rewarding volunteering can be.
“Whether you have a lifelong passion for railways or are simply looking for a new and fulfilling way to spend your time, we’d love for you to come along.”

The open day offers a chance to meet current volunteers and staff, learn about day-to-day operations, and discover the variety of roles available, from operating trains to restoring historic carriages, supporting events, or welcoming visitors.
Visitors can explore different departments, including carriage and wagon, customer services, the booking office, tearoom, and station shop.
Demonstrations and hands-on activities will include ticketing demonstrations, refreshment preparation, retail insights, and the chance to sit in the Great Western Saloon to learn more about the behind-the-scenes work on the North Yorkshire Pullman services.
There will also be engineering tours, talks on station operations, lineside conservation, and demonstrations from the estates team.
The NYMR welcomes volunteers from all backgrounds, including students aged 17 and above, those not currently working, and individuals who are semi-retired or retired.
The open day is aimed at anyone interested in learning new skills, meeting new people, or giving back to the community by volunteering with the NYMR.
Volunteers play a crucial role in keeping the railway running, contributing their time and talents to help preserve a vital piece of railway heritage.
While registration is not required, the NYMR encourages attendees to pre-register online if possible.
