YEREVAN, October 6. /ARKA/. American International Airports, an Argentine company owned by Eduardo Eurnekian, an Argentine national of Armenian heritage, which operates Armenia’s main Zvartnots airport, intends to invest $500 million over a decade to expand the facility’s size, thereby reinforcing Armenia’s position as a competitive hub in the region.

Marcelo Wende, CEO of Armenia International Airports C (the concessionaire for Zvartnots Airport), told Forbes that the number of boarding gates will rise from six to sixteen, the quantity of arrivals halls, immigration zones, and customs areas will more than double.

Wende indicated that the plan encompasses the addition of modern waiting rooms, an expansion of parking facilities, and enhancements to passenger transportation.

“We are also preparing to implement automated digital passport gates and introduce a new biometric passport system, which will facilitate travel for Armenian citizens, particularly to Europe,” he added.

He noted that passenger numbers have significantly surpassed projections over the last two years, now exceeding 5.5 million annually, while the original terminal was designed for only 3-4 million passengers, making expansion essential for ensuring safety, comfort, and efficiency for all travelers.

According to Wende, Armenia is welcoming to business and possesses potential for serious investors.

“Local professionals are motivated, eager to learn, and readily adapt to new standards. The business environment is conducive and free from unnecessary barriers for companies looking to establish and expand here. Our experience demonstrates that investors can thrive in aviation, infrastructure, agriculture, finance, and various other sectors,” he emphasized.

Yerevan’s Zvartnots International Airport is managed by Armenia International Airports CJSC under a 30-year concession agreement established with the Armenian government in 2001. The company also oversees Gyumri’s Shirak Airport.-0-
