MANILA, Philippines – At some point, it felt like a cat-and-mouse chase between Rappler and businesswoman Sarah Discaya, who ran for Pasig City mayor in the recent round of polls, and who is now embroiled in a controversy over anomalous flood control projects funded by the government, i.e. by Filipino taxpayers.
During the local campaign period from March 28 to May 10, 2025, Rappler senior producer and reporter JC Gotinga kept pursuing Discaya to ask a rather obvious question: Would she, if she became mayor, inhibit her company, St. Gerrard Construction, from bidding for the massive infrastructure projects she was promising voters? But while Discaya was granting sit-down interviews with other outlets, she was decidedly avoiding Rappler, as this video attests to.
Now that we know she owns — at least “partially,” according to her — eight other companies that she did not disclose while she was campaigning, it puts that chase between her and Rappler in a starker light. Was she avoiding the question of conflict of interest? – Rappler.com
