SKYWORTH Portable 24″ TV Review

When I first saw the SKYWORTH Portable 24” TV online, I had my doubts. I mean, they could have come up with a better name for it. But names and listings can be deceiving. And sometimes that means the thing that’s listed is actually better than what you think it is. Don’t get me wrong, the SKYWORTH Portable 24” TV isn’t perfect. But for what it is, for how it’s priced, and for what it provides. This is a seriously useful and surprising piece of portable home theater technology.

Estimated reading time: 13 minutes

The use cases are numerous. From RV and camping use to vacation stays and garage entertainment. This is an incredibly versatile little device, and with Christmas coming fast, it may make a perfect little gift! Let’s get into the review!

I wasn’t sure what I was going to think of the SKYWORTH Portable 24” TV when they asked if I would review it. Honestly, it looked a little gimmicky on Amazon. But now that I’ve experienced it. This thing is very handy, and there are a ton of people who could use this. The price point of 499 USD isn’t a bad ask, but it does go on sale and, as of this review, is only 349 USD on Amazon. The SKYWORTH Portable 24” TV is a great buy and a great gift for just about anyone.

The SKYWORTH Portable 24” TV is a lightweight and portable TV that’s perfect for travelers and home use. The design is attractive, and it’s made with high-quality materials. Setup is pretty simple with Google TV built-in, so there’s no need for a separate dongle. The hard-shell carrying case is a bonus and protects the device very well. The display looks good in most cases, but it does suffer from poor off-axis viewing angles.

The sale price makes this an almost impulse buy, and that wouldn’t be a bad thing. Sound quality is just okay, but you can’t expect that much from something so small. It does have HDMI ARC for an external soundbar; that’s good. Performance can be a bit choppy, with button presses taking longer than I would like. So the processor in this is likely not the best. But it is tolerable and not just totally unusable. I liked this thing far more than I thought I would.

The SKYWORTH Portable 24” TV design is actually very nice. I mean, it’s a display with a handle. The front houses that Full HD display, and the speakers are right under that. The speakers are covered in an attractive brownish fabric with the power button in the center.

The bezel around the display is fairly slim and not massive. The base of the SKYWORTH Portable 24” TV sits at a slight angle on rubber feet, which naturally angles the display ever so slightly. The top has a leather strap that’s perfect for carrying and comfortable.

The back of the SKYWORTH Portable has venting and the SKYWORTH logo, not much more than that. The side is where the I/O is located, and here’s what you get.

The carrying case is really an outstanding value add. It is very protective and made of high-quality materials. It has a carrying strap and handle. The inside is molded to the TV, and the TV is well protected. It also has molded cutouts for the power supply and remote. It’s really an excellent carrying case. I think it adds a ton of value to the overall package.

Overall, the design is attractive, and I like the way it looks. I like the materials, and it seems fairly robust.

The SKYWORTH Portable 24” TV display is not 4K, and I am okay with that. I’ve seen other reviews knock it for only being Full HD, but I feel Full HD is enough for this panel. What made me raise an eyebrow is the backlighting on this panel. It uses ELED lighting, and here are a few points about ELED if you’re not familiar with it.

ELED makes sense in this application. It allows the SKYWORTH Portable to be thin and consume less energy. But it does come at a cost. Black levels and contrast aren’t the best here, especially in bright rooms and sunlight. The nit rating is just 250 nits, so that makes this a bit harder to watch in bright sunlight and very bright rooms. Viewing angles also suffer, again, in bright conditions. In a dark room, viewing angles are much better.

The colors on the SKYWORTH Portable are pretty nice, especially when viewed directly and in a darker environment. Full HD is plenty crisp, and the picture looks sharp. Overall, you really can’t complain all that much for what this is. If you’re coming at this expecting all the bells and whistles of a high-end TV at this price point. Then you’re dreaming and a bit nuts. This display looks good, but it does require certain environmental conditions to get the most out of it.

One of the nicest things about the SKYWORTH Portable 24” TV is that it needs very little physical setup. It already comes packed up inside the carrying case. The only thing needed is to remove the protective coverings.

After that, it’s just plug and play. You will need to set up Google TV if you intend to use that. Or you can plug in another streaming device. Overall, the setup experience is fairly straightforward and easy.

The SKYWORTH Portable 24” TV runs on Google TV. You could plug in a Roku or Amazon stick if you prefer, but I like Google TV better. I was happy to see Google TV instead of Android TV; Google TV is better. The interface was a bit laggy, but I cover that in the performance section below. The lag has nothing to do with the software. Here are my key takeaways of Google TV.

Overall, I like Google TV on the SKYWORTH Portable; even with the lag, it’s probably the best option for it.

The SKYWORTH Portable 24” TV comes with built-in speakers, and they work fairly well. No. They are not home theater quality. You can’t actually expect that from something so small. But they work fine and work great in a small room. You do have HDMI ARC, so you can use a soundbar or home theater system with it.

Overall, for a portable TV, the speakers work pretty great. They aren’t going to give you a theater-level experience, but they will work on the move. This means you don’t have to carry an extra set of speakers around with you if you don’t want to. So it’s more a matter of convenience than performance. These will be fine for most users and can be expanded on with external speakers.

The SKYWORTH Portable 24” TV is running Google TV. I guess you can think of it as a Chromecast with a 24” display. I am glad that SKYWORTH went with Google TV and not Android TV. Google TV is a better experience and easier to navigate.

That said. I did have some issues with lag when navigating the interface. Button pushes took a split second to register to the UI, and moving around the UI is just a bit laggy. It’s not unusable, and I think it’s tolerable for what this device is.

As far as the apps themselves, once launched, no issues at all. Playback is smooth, and as long as your internet connection is solid, it plays content smoothly. So while the interface can feel slow at times, the more important playing back of content is good.

The SKYWORTH Portable also houses a battery that the company says should last up to 3 hours. That’s mostly accurate, as I was able to get just under 3 hours.

Overall, maybe SKYWORTH could increase the processing power and RAM for a smoother interface experience.

The SKYWORTH Portable 24” TV MSRP is 499 USD, but it’s often on sale for less. At 499, I think it’s a great little investment that comes with a lot of value, including that great carrying case. As of this review, Amazon has this on sale for 349 USD, and at that price, this is a no-brainer if you’re looking for something like this. This is an excellent Christmas gift.
