An incoming week of snow and rain in the forecast may make for unpleasant travel conditions on the Western Slope, but it’s not expected to hinder work on the Skyway Station where contractors hired by the Grand Mesa Nordic Council have mostly finished the exterior of a ski lodge planned to open in April.
“The building crew is so far ahead that even if they did happen to get delayed for snow by a day or so, it’s not really affecting the timeline at all,” Skyway Station Project Manager Dan Tille said. “I would say the exterior of the building’s probably 98%, 99% completed at this point, except for some minor details … so the builders have switched to the inside of the building.”
In the council’s latest update, the group said the building’s siding was recently finished, as were a few benches.
Crews expect to start installing flooring and lighting this week, with a handful of electrical installations planned in the coming months, according to Tille, who expects at least another month and a half of work before the structure is prepared for required county inspections.
“We can’t turn any of this stuff on until we pass inspections,” he said. “There’s a lot of minor details we’re trying to wrap up. We’re still on-budget and we’re on-time. Our builder promised us the beginning of April to have this ready to go, and I’d say we’re on-target for that right now.”
Once finished, the roughly $1.64 million building will provide a gathering space, warming hut and equipment storage area near the Skyway Trailhead. Construction began in August, and is funded by over 350 donors to the ski council, according to previous press releases.
