A skip wagon drove into a building on a Merseyside main road causing traffic disruption. Merseyside Police officers attended the scene on the corner of Derby Road and Bankhall Street, Kirkdale, this morning where a wagon carrying a skip drove into a building surrounded by scaffolding.
The former Griffin pub where the vehicle smashed into is currently being refurbished after it closed three years ago, since being left derelict. Having previously served as a raw dog food supplier and party shop site, the site has become unloved over time.
Proposals earlier this year saw plans submitted to Liverpool City Council to transform the building into a 20-bed aparthotel with a bar and restaurant just a stone’s throw from the Hill Dickenson Stadium.
Although plans will not have taken into account a vehicle driving into the scaffolding that currently surrounds the building.
When the ECHO attended, the vehicle had been damaged in the crash and it appeared some of the scaffold had been hit in the crash.
One police car was at the scene with traffic being reduced to one lane heading towards the city centre at the junction.
It is unclear whether any injuries had been caused by the incident, although the force incident manager (FIM) for Merseyside Police said it is more than likely a damage only crash.
It is also unclear whether or not any structural damage had been done to either the scaffolding or the building.
