When most people hear “human trafficking,” they think of sex crimes, and yes, that’s part of it. But trafficking also includes forced labor, domestic servitude, and the exploitation of minors through online recruitment or manipulation. Here in West Texas, local authorities say it’s often hiding in plain sight, from restaurants and construction sites to online ads and social media.
Human trafficking happens when someone uses force, fraud, or coercion to control another person for profit. Victims can be anyone, men, women, or children, often promised jobs or a better life, only to find themselves trapped. It’s modern-day slavery, and it’s happening right here in our own backyard.
Human trafficking thrives on vulnerability and profit. Traffickers exploit people struggling with poverty, homelessness, or emotional instability.
Groups like Beyond Trafficking Abilene and local law enforcement are working hard to stop it, but awareness starts with all of us. The more we learn and speak up, the more lives we can save across the Big Country.
