‘Significant changes’ for council services in Nuneaton and Bedworth

People living in Nuneaton and Bedworth are being asked to have their say on “significant changes” to council services in their area.

Under government proposals for local government reorganisation, all six councils in Warwickshire, including Nuneaton and Bedworth, will be abolished in just under three years’ time.

Currently a ‘divorce’ from Warwickshire is on the cards, as plans for a single council covering all of Warwickshire are not favoured by the district and borough councils.

Instead, a new ‘North’ council comprised of Nuneaton and Bedworth, North Warwickshire, and Rugby Borough councils was proposed as the ‘most effective’ option in an independent report.

There would then be a South council, including Stratford and Warwick.

This could also lead to the creation of town and parish councils within the two authorities.

No final decision has been made, and people living in the area are being asked to have their say on the plans before they are officially finalised and sent to the government in November.

Should the plans put forward be rubber-stamped, all of the old councils would be abolished and the new ones set up by April 1, 2028.

A online questionnaire has been up for views to be shared on. This will run until September 14.

Councillors will use this information to help them to make their final decision.

“Significant changes are on the horizon for councils across Warwickshire, and we’re inviting our residents to help shape the future,” the councils have said.

“We urge individuals, businesses, town and parish councils and community groups to learn more about the government’s proposals and share their views on who should deliver the essential services we all depend on.”

Those who would like help completing the questionnaire or to request a large print version, contact Opinion Research Services (ORS) on 0800 3247004 or email [email protected]
