Shoplifting Surges in Three States, with New Mexico at the Top ” Live Insurance News

It’s a five-finger discount that’s costing retailers billions. Shoplifting isn’t just a minor nuisance; it’s a major crisis hitting small businesses right where it hurts. The pockets. New data shows a staggering rise in theft, particularly in a few key states, forcing Main Street to fight back.

A recent study from the criminal defense law firm Summit Defense, using 2024 FBI Crime Explorer data, paints a grim picture. Western states are getting hit hard. Very hard.

New Mexico takes the unfortunate top spot. The state sees 777.97 shoplifting incidents for every 100,000 residents. That’s a shocking 106% above the national average. January 2024 was especially brutal, with 82.04 incidents — the worst single month for any state.

Oregon isn’t far behind. It ranks second with 675.98 incidents per 100,000 people, which is 79% higher than the U.S. average. The problem seems to spike as the year ends. August saw 61.51 incidents, with November (59.87) and December (58.66) also showing high rates.

Coming in at number three is Arizona, with 587.83 incidents per 100,000 residents, or 56% above the national average. Rounding out the top five are Delaware (581.84) and New York (558.55). The study also found that across 46 states, the 30-39 age group was the most common for shoplifting.

Interestingly, other Western states buck this trend. Idaho has the lowest rate in the nation at just 176.90 incidents, 53% below average. Hawaii and Alaska also have some of the country’s lowest shoplifting numbers.

For a small business owner, this isn’t just a statistic. It’s a daily battle. How are they supposed to cope? They’re getting creative. And determined.

Many are investing heavily in staff training. They teach employees to spot suspicious behavior and de-escalate situations. You might see more door greeters, whose simple “hello” can deter a potential thief. Store layouts are changing, too. Better sightlines mean fewer blind spots. High-theft items? They’re now in locked cases or behind the counter.

Technology is another weapon. RFID tags on products, electronic article surveillance (EAS) gates at the door, and better cameras are becoming common. Some shops are forming community watch groups with neighboring businesses and working closer with local law enforcement. For busy periods, they might hire third-party security. Others are rethinking self-checkout, checking receipts at the door, or even adjusting store hours to reduce risk. It’s a constant effort.

Online shops don’t have this problem. Not exactly. They don’t worry about someone walking out with unpaid merchandise. But they face their own threats. Chargeback fraud, porch pirates stealing packages, and account takeovers are their version of shrink.

Still, e-commerce stores have an edge. They don’t have to pay for in-store loss prevention staff, security gates, or locked cabinets. This lets them price items more aggressively, giving them a margin advantage that brick-and-mortar stores just can’t match while fighting theft.

So, does insurance save the day? It’s complicated. Most standard business owner’s policies (BOPs) include coverage for theft. But there’s a catch. Shoplifting by an unknown person often isn’t covered, or it’s incredibly hard to claim. Insurers typically want proof of a burglary or robbery, like a smashed window. Employee theft usually requires a separate fidelity or crime endorsement.

Even if a loss is covered, high deductibles can make filing a claim pointless. If your deductible is $1,000 and you lose $500 in merchandise, you’re on your own. Filing frequent small claims also risks a massive premium hike, so many owners just absorb the loss. As premiums rise anyway, businesses are forced to pass costs to you, accept lower margins, or take on even higher deductibles.

The holiday season brings a rush of customers. A blessing and a curse. More foot traffic means more sales, but it also means a greater risk of theft. For small shops already operating on thin margins, it’s a stressful time.

This is when they need community support the most. These business owners are our neighbors. They sponsor local sports teams and create local jobs. Their survival matters.

Want to make a difference? It’s easier than you think. This holiday season, make a conscious choice to support local retailers. Shop in their stores. If you buy online, use their in-store pickup option.

Be patient with the new security measures you see. That receipt check or locked case is there for a reason. Leave a positive online review. Buy a gift card for a friend. Follow their social media pages and join their loyalty programs. Every little bit helps these businesses not just survive, but thrive.
