Since opening in October, the Shire of East Pilbara’s Youth and Community Garden at the Newman Youth Centre has continued to flourish, and now the project is looking for green-thumbed volunteers to help it thrive.
A dedicated team of community gardeners have been hard at work nurturing the space, from planting and seeding to shaping the garden into a vibrant community asset.
The shire is now encouraging more community members to get involved.
Shire president Cr Anthony Middleton said the garden was quickly becoming a positive, hands-on space for young people and the wider community.
“Community gardens grow friendships as well as food,” he said.
“This one is already giving our young people a place to pitch in, learn a few skills, and feel proud of what they’re building.
“We’ve had a great start, and now we’re keen to get a few more locals involved — whether you’re a keen gardener, a handy helper, or just someone who wants to support the kids and be part of something positive in town.”
A collaborative project between the Shire’s Youth Centre and residents, the Youth and Community Garden gives young people the chance to contribute to the design, planting and everyday activities that shape the space.
Backed by the WA Government’s Department of Communities through the Community Gardens Grants Program, the initiative aims to foster new skills, strengthen social connections, and support community wellbeing while building a welcoming hub at the youth centre.
