REDDING, Calif. — Scouting America troops in Shasta County, formerly known as the Boy Scouts, are marking their first anniversary of welcoming girls into their ranks.
Although the organization began admitting girls in 2019, this all-girls troop is a new addition to Shasta County, offering local girls the chance to explore and learn about the nature surrounding them.
Roberta McLaughlin, a volunteer with Troop 54, emphasized the importance of inclusivity. “So, a lot of people ask why invite girls into a boy’s organization? Well out in the real world we are dealing with men and women all the time and this gives them an opportunity for leadership roles and to learn some of those roles as a teenager and continue on with that leadership into their future careers,” she said.
McLaughlin noted that the scouts can learn about camping, rifle use and, most importantly, leadership skills that are applicable in real-world situations as they grow.
She said they are looking for more girls to join their troop so if you know anyone who is interested, they can sign up here.
