Selena y Los Dinos: The Legacy of a Family explores the late singer’s life through never-before-seen footage from the Quintanilla family archive, offering an intimate and profound perspective never shown before.
The documentary features exclusive interviews with close relatives, including her parents Marcella and Abraham, her husband Chris, and her bandmates. Through their voices, the film traces Selena’s meteoric rise — from early performances at the family’s Tex-Mex restaurant in Lake Jackson to topping the charts and gaining international recognition.
The film portrays Selena not just as an artist, but also as a sister, daughter, and wife. Directed by Isabel Castro (Mija, Darlin), the documentary includes executive production by Michele Anthony and Selena’s siblings, Suzette Quintanilla and AB Quintanilla III, who played drums and bass in the band.
Selena Quintanilla was a Mexican-American singer who revolutionized Tejano music in the 1990s and became an icon of Latino culture. Born in Texas in 1971, she began performing at a young age with her family’s band, Selena y Los Dinos. Her talent, charisma, and style broke barriers in a male-dominated genre. Tragically, her life was cut short in 1995 when she was murdered by Yolanda Saldívar, the president of her fan club and former manager of her boutiques.
Selena lost her life on March 31, 1995, in a hotel room in Corpus Christi, at the age of 23. The tragedy unfolded after she confronted Yolanda Saldívar over the alleged embezzlement of more than $60,000 from her fan club and boutique operations.
According to court testimony, the two began arguing in room 158 around 11:00 a.m. At 11:48 a.m., Selena attempted to leave the room, but Saldívar pulled out a .38-caliber Taurus revolver and shot her in the right side of her back. The wound caused massive blood loss.
Despite the severity of her injury, Selena managed to run nearly 100 meters to the hotel lobby, where she collapsed. Meanwhile, Saldívar fled to her red pickup truck with the weapon in hand.
Selena was rushed to Corpus Christi’s Memorial Hospital. However, she arrived with no brain activity and was not breathing on her own. About an hour later, she was pronounced dead.
