Big Bash League: Sam Fanning re-signs with Perth ScorchersJackson BarrettThe West AustralianMon, 16 June 2025 9:00AMCommentsCommentsEmail Jackson Barrett
Perth Scorchers batter Sam Fanning says he can’t wait to resume his partnership with Finn Allen after re-signing with the club that showed faith in him as an opener at the end of last season.
Fanning — who has played four matches across two seasons for the club — is the latest Scorcher to sign a one-year deal ahead of Thursday afternoon’s overseas player draft.
With another batter locked in on the books, Perth is firming to take an international bowler later this week.
Fanning scored 71 runs, including an impressive 41 in a condemned chase against Sydney Sixers, during the last campaign.
He was elevated to open alongside Allen in the final games of the season with both English imports Keaton Jennings and Matthew Hurst out of the side.
The 24-year-old is likely to be given a sustained run in the side as part of a top-order set to also include Allen and white-ball star Cooper Connolly at No.3.
“I’m definitely excited to be involved for another year, having that taste towards the end of last season was awesome,” Fanning said.
“I watched the Big Bash all throughout my teenage years and loved it so to be playing that consistent role at the top of the order was absolutely unreal.
“Naturally I have always been quite attacking but haven’t showcased it, so it’s nice to have the chance to show my more attacking side. It’s another reason why opening the batting with Finn Allen, who is such a destructive player, was a great experience and something I learned a lot from.”
The Scorchers now have two local list spots remaining, but will hold one of those over until after the draft.
They have confirmed their commitment to the second year of Allen’s contract with the club, despite other white-ball franchise tournaments encroaching on this year’s Big Bash.
That will leave them with two spots available to draft overseas players and there is a growing chance one of those picks could be used on a spinner for what would be just the second time in the club’s history.
