SCHENECTADY — A Schenectady man faces up to seven years in prison after pleading guilty to an arson charge recently.
Namere Thompson, 33, pleaded guilty on Aug. 12 to the second-degree violent felony charge stemming from a Jan. 23 incident, where he was accused of setting numerous fires inside his apartment at University Place in downtown Schenectady while nearly 20 other residents were inside the building in the early morning hours.
Thompson was arrested following a joint investigation by Schenectady police and fire departments that included witness interviews and security footage. Fire investigators were able to determine the flames were intentionally set by Thompson, according to a news release from the Schenectady County district attorney’s office.
Occupants were awake at the time and were able to alert other residents. There were no injuries.
Assistant District Attorney Elizabeth Woodward Thompson prosecuted the case.
Thompson is set to be sentenced by Schenectady County Court Judge Matthew Sypniewski on Oct. 15.
