The Supreme Court has permitted the sale and use of green firecrackers in Delhi ahead of Diwali, praising Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s efforts. The decision marks a shift from previous AAP government policies. The court emphasized a balanced approach, ensuring festivities without harming the environment.
The Supreme Court of India has lifted restrictions on the sale and bursting of green firecrackers in Delhi, signaling a major change in the capital’s Diwali celebrations. The decision has been met with praise from Delhi’s Minister Parvesh Verma, who credited Chief Minister Rekha Gupta for the policy shift.
Verma, in a statement to ANI, criticized the former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government for what he described as anti-Hindu festival policies. Echoing similar sentiments, Delhi Law Minister Kapil Mishra thanked the Supreme Court and Gupta for listening to public opinion, suggesting the previous administration could have taken similar steps but chose not to.
The judgment, delivered by a bench including Chief Justice of India BR Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandra, highlights the need for a balanced approach between celebration and environmental protection. The court approved the use of green firecrackers from October 18 to 21, with strict timing regulations, and instructed authorities to enforce rules on approved firecrackers while monitoring air quality.
