Sani’s leadership and compassion in moments of crisis

In our daily life, moments of triumph amid tragedy serve as beacons of hope. On Thursday, February 5, 2026, Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, stood at the forefront of such a moment, welcoming back the last group of abducted residents from Kurmin Wali — a predominantly Christian community that had endured the harrowing ordeal of mass kidnapping.

The event, marked by profound emotion and resolute action, exemplifies Governor Uba Sani’s leadership style: one rooted in compassion, accessibility, and a steadfast commitment to the welfare of his people. As he received the returnees at Sir Kashim Ibrahim House, Kaduna, Governor Uba Sani not only celebrated their safe return but also reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to preventing future atrocities and the rebuilding of shattered and traumatized lives.

The kidnapping incident in Kurmin Wali had gripped the nation, highlighting the persistent threat of banditry and terrorism in Northern Nigeria but from which Kaduna State had been insulated for a long time only to be rudely shocked by what analysts have termed “orchestrated kidnapping in Southern Kaduna by political opportunists” to tarnish the image of the administration.

A total of 183 individuals, mostly Christians from this rural enclave, were snatched from their homes and livelihoods in a brazen attack that underscored the vulnerabilities faced by marginalized communities. The victims’ return was not just a logistical achievement but a testament to coordinated efforts involving state and federal security apparatuses. Governor Sani, in his remarks, captured the collective sigh of relief: “It is with a profound sense of relief, gratitude to God Almighty, and quiet reverence that I welcome our resilient brothers and sisters of Kurmin Wali to Sir Kashim Ibrahim House, following their safe return from the shadow of captivity. Today, Kaduna State breathes easier.”

That declaratory remark sets the tone for Governor Uba Sani’s approach, one that blends spiritual gratitude with practical governance. His words evoke a leader who sees himself not as a distant authority but as a fellow citizen sharing in the community’s pain and joy. By invoking God’s name and describing the return as emerging from “the shadow of captivity,” Governor Sani humanizes the crisis, reminding Kaduna’s residents that their governor shares their faith and fears. This is no mere rhetoric; it reflects his determination to always identify with the people. Throughout his tenure so far, Sani has made it a point to be available at all times, often visiting affected areas personally and engaging directly with victims’ families. In this instance, his presence at the reception ceremony was more than ceremonial — it was a significant act of solidarity, ensuring that the returnees felt seen, heard, and supported from the moment they stepped into freedom.

Sani’s compassion shone brilliantly in his detailed account of the victims’ plight and the immediate support provided. He confirmed with solemn assurance that “no member of the community remains in bondage. Every abducted soul has been returned to the embrace of home.” This assurance was backed by facts: “Of the 183 persons taken from the community and livelihoods, 11 returned earlier bearing injuries, visible testimonies of their ordeal. They received immediate medical attention and were reunited with their families. Now, we receive the remaining 172. Already, 83 are undergoing medical treatment and psychosocial support, while the newly returned 89 will immediately receive the same comprehensive care, ensuring not merely survival, but restoration of body, mind, and dignity.”

Here, Governor Sani’s leadership is evident in his emphasis on holistic recovery. Recognizing that trauma extends beyond physical wounds, his administration prioritized psychosocial support — a forward-thinking measure in a region where mental health resources are often scarce. This approach demonstrates a compassionate leader who understands the long-term scars of captivity. He was deeply moved by the courage of these returnees: “by their steadiness of spirit, their refusal to surrender hope, and their resolve to rebuild their lives. Their expressions of gratitude; to the Kaduna State Government and to our security agencies, are humbling, and stand as a reminder of the sacred trust between the state and its people.”

By quoting the victims’ own words of thanks, Governor Uba Sani amplifies their voices, fostering a sense of mutual respect and reinforcing his commitment to being a governor for all, regardless of faith or ethnicity.

In moments of crisis, true leadership often involves acknowledging the contributions of others while steering the ship forward. Here, Governor Uba Sani exemplified this by extending heartfelt appreciation to key figures in the rescue operation. He praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his “personal engagement and unwavering concern which underscored his commitment to the safety of every Nigerian.” In a similar way, he commended the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, the Director-General of the DSS, Mr. Oluwatosin Ajayi and other security agencies, “whose professionalism and sacrifice were decisive in securing this outcome.”

This collaborative spirit highlights Governor Sani’s humility and strategic acumen; by crediting federal partners, he strengthens alliances crucial for tackling insecurity in Kaduna, a state that has seen and enjoyed relative peace, comparatively, owing to the synergies of the aforementioned agencies until this dastardly targeting of a Christian community in recent years.

Yet, Sani’s vision extends beyond immediate relief. His statement underscores a proactive agenda to address root causes and improve quality of life in vulnerable areas like Kurmin Wali. In his words, “Beyond today’s reunion, our responsibility endures,” he declared, outlining tangible initiatives: “We are constructing an access road to Kurmin Wali, establishing a healthcare facility, and providing targeted support to farmers and industrious residents to restore livelihoods and dignity. We are also advocating for the establishment of a military base to strengthen security in the area.”

These measures are particularly significant in the southern Kaduna axis, where ethnic and religious tensions have for long been a recurrent thing until Sani came into office. The access road will not only facilitate quicker security responses but also boost economic connectivity, allowing farmers — many of whom are Christians, reliant on agriculture to transport goods more efficiently. The healthcare facility will address a critical gap. In rural locales like Kurmin Wali, medical access is limited, and post-trauma care is virtually nonexistent. By prioritizing this, the Governor Uba Sani’s administration is investing in long-term resilience, ensuring that communities can heal and thrive. The push for a military base is a bold step toward deterrence, signaling that the government will not abandon these areas to bandits and scoundrels.

Sani’s determination to be ever-present for his people is a recurring theme in his governance. Since assuming office, he has made unscheduled visits to conflict zones, held town halls in remote villages, and maintained an open-door policy at Government House. In his words, “This moment is not merely an end to captivity; it is a reaffirmation of our collective resolve that no community will be abandoned, and no suffering ignored.” This pledge resonates deeply in a state like Kaduna, where divisions along religious lines — Muslims in the north, Christians in the south — have historically fueled mistrust. Governor Uba Sani, a Muslim senator-turned-governor, has bridged these gaps through inclusive policies, such as equitable distribution of infrastructure projects and interfaith dialogues. His handling of the Kurmin Wali crisis further cements this reputation, showing that leadership in Nigeria’s diverse landscape requires accommodation and empathy across divides.

In time past Christian communities, often in rural areas, bear a disproportionate burden, facing targeted attacks that disrupt worship, education, and farming. Governor Sani’s compassionate response — personally receiving the victims, ensuring medical and psychological aid, and quoting their gratitude — humanizes governance in a system often criticized for detachment. His leadership style contrasts with predecessors who might have issued distant press releases; instead, he embodies availability, stating implicitly through actions that he is there at all times for the people.

Sani’s action on the return of the Kurmin Wali abductees encapsulates a leader who leads with heart and head. His remarks reveal a man profoundly affected by his people’s suffering, yet resolute in action. By showing compassion through immediate support, demonstrating leadership via collaborations and infrastructure pledges, and committing to perpetual availability, Governor Uba Sani inspires hope in a region desperate for it. As Kaduna moves forward, this moment stands as a reaffirmation that effective governance can turn the tide against a challenging crisis, ensuring no soul is left in the shadows.
