ATHENS – Former prime minister Antonis Samaras, who was ousted from New Democracy after bitterly criticizing policies of Premier Kyriakos Mitsotakis, attacked him again, saying has turned New Democracy into a “personal party.”
Samaras said Mitsotakis has changed the Conservatives ideology, widening the schism between them, although the former premier said his differences with Mitsotakis are political and not professional.
Samaras had broken with Mitsotakis over the Prime Minister’s pushing through a same sex-marriage bill and for what he said was Mitsotakis behind soft on Turkey and said their differences are “value-based.”
Samaras went on to criticize the government’s policies on foreign affairs and gender
“The problem is that Mitsotakis can’t stand the right, the center-right, nor the history or the grassroots base of New Democracy. That’s why he has turned it into a hybrid of Simitis-era PASOK,” Samaras added, referring to a former center-left government.
He also spoke about being expelled in November 2024 and said that Mitsotakis was looking for an excuse to sideline him. “It’s the first time in the party’s history that a former prime minister and party president has been expelled,” he said.
