Ryanair has issued a stern warning against disruptive passenger behaviour – as incidents have more than tripled in the past year.
According to the Irish Aviation Authority, the number of incidents involving difficult and unruly passengers on commercial flights operated by airlines certified in Ireland more than trebled last year to over 1,400. Ryanair’s Director of Communications Jade Kirwan attributed the increase to airlines taking a tougher stance on passengers causing disruptions.
Ms Kirwan outlined travel bans, fines, or prosecution as potential repercussions for unruly passengers, and she also advocated for airports to limit passengers’ alcohol consumption to help reduce the number of incidents – repeating calls that Ryanair have been making for months. “That is us coming together collectively as an industry to ensure that crew and other members of the industry are presenting to the IAA with those reports of disruptive passenger behaviour,” she told Newstalk.
“So, we’re not letting anything slip through the cracks. I think Ryanair has been very clear on our zero-tolerance position towards just disruptive passenger behaviour.
“We aren’t going to stand for it, and the very small number of people that do misbehave on our flights will be held accountable and face consequences. Alcohol does play a big role, it’s a huge factor in disruptive behaviour.
“That’s something that we think could be easily tackled at an airport level. You have passengers arriving at airports, excited to go on their holidays and all the rest of it.
“They’ll overindulge in the airport bars and then sometimes they’ll kick off in airports – but equally sometimes they’ll make it through to the fight and can cause disruption there as well. Yes, they’ll cause a fuss in airports – but equally sometimes they’ll make it through to the flight and can cause disruption there as well.”
And regarding complaints about the enforcement of Ryanair’s baggage policy – and Ryanair offering staff bonuses for spotting heavy bags – Ms Kirwan stated: “it’s a very simple solution – just turn up at the gate with your correct baggage allowance.
“We’re striving to run a highly efficient low-cost airline and to maintain that operational efficiency, we need adherence to our baggage rules.”
