Rural Tourism in China Thrives During National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival Holidays: How Local Communities are Benefiting from the Surge in Visitors

During the eight-day National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival holidays, China’s rural tourism industry saw a sharp increase in visitors, which significantly boosted the economy of many villages throughout the nation. In addition to helping local companies, the surge of tourists introduced tourists to China’s rural charm, introducing them to the country’s natural beauty, traditional food, and agricultural heritage. Unprecedented visitor numbers in rural areas, especially in Guizhou and Hubei, underscored the growing significance of agritourism and local cultural experiences as tourism tactics.

A key factor driving the tourism boom in Guizhou province was the opening of the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge on September 28, 2023. This bridge, touted as the tallest in the world, is a modern marvel standing 625 metres above the Beipan River. The bridge’s construction has not only shortened travel times significantly, from two hours to just two minutes, but it has also transformed the region into a major tourism hub. Situated in the picturesque Huajiang township, the bridge has attracted visitors from both within China and abroad, eager to witness this engineering feat.

During the National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival holidays, nearby villages, such as Keli in Huajiang township, experienced an overwhelming influx of visitors. On October 1, more than 10,000 vehicles entered the village, a testament to the bridge’s appeal. Villagers, eager to take advantage of the opportunity, set up over 50 temporary stalls to sell local snacks, drinks, and traditional dishes. Many of these items were closely tied to the local culture and agricultural produce, giving visitors a taste of the region’s culinary heritage.

The economic impact of this tourist surge was significant. One local vendor selling rice noodles, a regional speciality, reported earning around 500 yuan (roughly $70) per day during the holiday period, which is a substantial sum considering the average earnings in rural areas. Accommodation in the area was in high demand, with all 24 guesthouses in Huajiang fully booked throughout the holidays. Some visitors were even forced to seek accommodations in more distant towns, illustrating just how popular the area had become.

The influx of tourists to Huajiang and nearby villages did more than just provide a short-term economic boost; it showcased the potential for sustainable rural development driven by tourism. Local authorities and businesses worked together to ensure that the growing number of visitors was accommodated efficiently. For example, temporary parking lots were quickly constructed to accommodate the overflow of cars, and shuttle services were set up to ferry visitors to the village from the bridge’s viewing platforms.

One particularly notable story came from Lin Guoquan, a local guesthouse owner in Huajiang. Lin’s guesthouse, which boasts rooms with stunning views of the bridge, saw its 40 rooms fully booked every day during the holidays. The demand was so high that Lin had to hire additional staff, bringing the total number of employees from three to eight to meet the increased needs. He also adapted by setting up tents and converting family homes into guest accommodations to accommodate nearly 100 extra guests per day.

This rapid adaptation to tourism demands is a testament to the resilience and entrepreneurial spirit of rural communities. While many residents had initially been hesitant about the impact of tourism on their way of life, the benefits became undeniable. The local economy flourished, providing an essential income source without requiring people to leave their homes.

One of the most rewarding aspects of the rural tourism boom has been the increased visibility of local agricultural products. In addition to enjoying the view of the bridge, many visitors explored stalls that sold locally grown produce. In Huajiang, the famous yellow cattle, a regional speciality, became a popular item for tourists to purchase, further promoting the area’s agricultural heritage.

This has been particularly beneficial for farmers and small businesses in the area. By tapping into the tourist market, many locals have been able to increase their earnings by offering products that tourists might not otherwise have encountered. This has created a symbiotic relationship between agriculture and tourism, where one enhances the value of the other.

The impact of tourism on local food culture is not just limited to Guizhou. Other regions in China, such as Zigui County in Hubei province, also experienced significant growth in tourism during the same period. Zigui is known for its scenic tea terraces, where visitors can not only admire the stunning landscape but also engage in hands-on tea-picking and processing activities.

In Zigui County, the rural landscape provided the perfect backdrop for a thriving tea-tourism industry. Shiya Village, famous for its picturesque mountain mist and terraced tea gardens, saw a rise in visitors during the holidays. As part of the local tea-tourism experience, visitors could take part in tea-picking and even learn about the traditional methods of tea processing at local farms and tea houses.

Local businesses have made considerable investments in developing infrastructure to support tourism, including building homestays, pavilions, and walking paths. In turn, these improvements have attracted a steady stream of tourists, keen on experiencing the rural charm of Zigui. The region’s efforts to promote its tea culture as part of its tourism strategy have paid off, with many visitors spending the day hiking the tea terraces, sampling local teas, and staying in homestays to fully immerse themselves in the area’s rural lifestyle.

Additionally, Zigui’s local tourism department reported that guesthouses in Shiya Village were nearly at full capacity during the first four days of the holiday. The county has made strides in helping over 1,000 local households join the tea industry, providing them with new economic opportunities.

Future expansion in these regions has been made possible by the success of rural tourism during the National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival holidays. China’s rural villages are realising the enormous potential of agritourism as they keep investing in tourism infrastructure. Rural communities are diversifying their economies and generating new sources of income for their residents by utilising their natural beauty, cultural heritage, and regional agricultural products.

Rural China provides visitors with a genuine experience that is frequently disregarded in favour of the more well-known tourist destinations in large cities. When combined with the chance to interact with local customs and culture, the serene beauty of China’s countryside offers a singular and enlightening experience.

To guarantee that the advantages of this industry last for a long time, local governments and companies alike must continue to place a high priority on sustainable tourism practices as the trend of rural travel continues to expand. Rural China has the potential to grow into a significant player in the world tourism market with the correct investments, providing a wide range of experiences that will draw tourists for many years to come.
