Shoppers are singing the praises of a €15 gadget that they say is helping their homes feel warmer ‘within an hour’, just in time for another cold snap sweeping across Cork.

Met Éireann has warned of below-zero temps in the days ahead, with some forecasters even predicting snow or sleet in the last days of January. And with energy bills soaring amid the ongoing cost of living crisis, many households are looking for ways to boost warmth without constantly running central heating. One product gaining widespread praise is the Fabian Clarke Reflective Radiator Foil, measuring 5m x 60cm and priced at €15.83 on Amazon Ireland.

The foil is designed to keep more warmth inside your home, helping to keep energy bills down at a time when heating costs are rising. Installed behind radiators, the company claims “up to 90% of heat is reflected back into the room”, which means less wasted energy and the potential “to save hundreds on bills over the colder months”.

It’s also simple to install. Shoppers can cut it to any size with regular kitchen scissors, make small slits for wall brackets, and slide the thermal foil behind their radiator. This foil fixes securely with the included “super strength, double sided sticky pads”.

Reusable year after year, the foil can be removed at the end of winter, folded for storage and reinstalled in “under a minute” using fresh sticky pads. It also comes with a three year warranty, and if there are any issues, the company promises to “provide a fast and hassle free replacement.”

From nearly 2,000 buyers, the foil has earned an average rating of 4.5 stars out of five. The majority of reviews are five star, with one impressed shopper raving about the foil’s ability to heat a room ‘within an hour of installing’.

They said: “Wish I’d have had this years ago. The roll managed to go behind five of my radiators, and within an hour of installing, my living room temperature went up 1C! Easy to fit, and only a pair of scissors required to get the cut to slide over the radiator wall fixing brackets.”

Another shopper added: “I liked these so much, I bought another pack and now have them behind every radiator in the house. The difference is massive – rooms heat up faster, and you can actually feel the extra warmth. The thickness of the panels is just right – sturdy enough to do the job without being bulky.

“The adhesive strength of the included strips is okay, but I ended up adding some extra tape to properly secure them (better safe than watching them slide down mid-winter). For the price, it’s a no-brainer. Easy to install, noticeable heat improvement, and likely to save you some cash on heating. Definitely worth it if you want to give your radiators a bit of extra firepower!”

A third wrote: “This (for me) was perfect. My house is roasty toasty. It does a much better job than my previous one. Not sure if its because it has a more bubbly, pop feel. It definitely works!”

Others shared: “I notice a fair bit of difference in the warmth of rooms. Glad I got it”, and “Excellent, easy to cut and use. Already making the house warmer.”

However, not every experience was perfect. One shopper left a four star review, noting: “Thought I’d try it because of the very cold weather. Yes, I think it does reflect some heat to some extent, although I had difficulty differentiating on which side to put towards the radiator or the wall, they both looked as shiny to me. So an indication on one side would help. Quite thick, quite easy to install irrespective of if I’ve got it the right way or not etc. could do with stickers being more sticky.”

Radiator reflectors work by bouncing heat from the back of a radiator back into the room, preventing it from being absorbed by an outside wall and wasted. These slim panels, with a foil backing, are installed behind the radiator to reflect radiant heat outward, which makes the room feel warmer more quickly and boosts heating efficiency – especially on outside walls that aren’t insulated.

They are widely available across Ireland, making it easy for households to find an option that suits their needs and budget. Screwfix stocks the Essentials 470mm x 4m Radiator Heat Reflector Foil for €10.65, while Woodies offers a similar version for €7.99, giving shoppers an affordable way to improve their home’s heating efficiency.

Aldi occasionally includes radiator reflectors in its Special Buys for €12.99, but these are only available while supplies last, so it’s worth keeping an eye on their seasonal offers. Other DIY and homeware retailers, as well as online shops, often carry similar reflective panels, making it simple to compare prices, sizes and styles to find the best fit for your home.
