Romania, with its deep history and breathtaking landscapes, seldom finds its way onto the travel radar, yet it brims with discovery. Sandstone fortresses, cobbled village squares, and valleys threaded with legend form a constellation of UNESCO jewels that reward the curious traveller. These nine places bring the past to life in ways that linger long after the journey is done.

Nestled in the heart of Transylvania, Brașov is a picturesque medieval town surrounded by the Southern Carpathian Mountains. It has a deep history, with traces of human settlement dating back to Neolithic times. The city is known for its impressive Gothic architecture, including the Black Church – Romania’s largest Gothic structure and the ancient town square, in use since 1364. Other key landmarks include the Rupea Hilltop Fortress and the narrow String Street, one of the continent’s thinnest streets.

For a spectacular view of the town and surrounding mountains, take the cable car up to Tampa Mountain. Brașov also serves as a base for exploring nearby attractions such as Bran Castle, also known as Dracula’s Castle, and the fairy-tale Peleș Castle.

Often referred to as ‘Dracula’s Castle,’ Bran Castle is a medieval fortress perched on a cliff in the Carpathian Mountains. Built in 1377, it has a rich history, having served as both a military stronghold and royal residence. Though not directly linked to the Dracula legend, the castle has become an iconic symbol of Bram Stoker’s fictional creation. Visitors can explore the castle’s dungeons, watchtowers, and art exhibitions, making it a must-visit for fans of the Dracula tale

Overlooking the Black Sea, the Casino Constanța is an Art Nouveau masterpiece that once served as a glamorous symbol of Romania’s seaside charm. Built in 1910, the casino was bombed during World War I and later converted into a restaurant and tourist attraction. Today, the building stands abandoned but continues to attract visitors intrigued by its history and the stories it holds. Plans to restore the casino are underway, ensuring its place as one of Romania’s iconic historical landmarks.

Corvin Castle, located in Hunedoara, is one of the largest and most impressive Gothic castles in Europe. Built in the 15th century by John Hunyadi, the castle features a mix of military and decorative elements, including a drawbridge, knights’ hall, and chapel. It’s a place where history and legend blend, with tales of torture and imprisonment surrounding its walls. The castle is also known for its iconic “Nje Boisia” tower, offering stunning views and a glimpse into medieval life.

Sighișoara, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe. Its old town is a labyrinth of colorful houses and cobbled streets, with the iconic Clock Tower standing guard over the city. Sighișoara is famous for being the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler, the real-life figure who inspired Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Visit Vlad’s birthplace, now a restaurant, and wander through the charming streets of this historic town that still echoes with centuries of history.

Located in the heart of Transylvania, Sibiu boasts a mix of medieval charm and vibrant modernity. The city is famous for its Eyes of Sibiu, the windows on the rooftops that give the impression of watching over the town. Sibiu’s historic center, with its two main squares-Piața Mare and Piața Mică offers numerous cultural and architectural gems, including the Bridge of Lies and the Lutheran Cathedral. The city is also known for its rich German heritage, which is reflected in the charming old houses and cobblestone streets.

For an experience that’s out of this world, head to Salina Turda, one of the oldest salt mines in the world, located near Cluj-Napoca. This historical site has been transformed into a modern tourist attraction, complete with an underground Ferris wheel, bowling alley, and a subterranean lake. Visitors can explore the mine’s vast chambers, learn about the history of salt mining, and enjoy the therapeutic benefits of salt therapy.

Peleș Castle, nestled in the Carpathian Mountains, is one of Romania’s most beautiful castles. Built between 1873 and 1914, it was the summer residence of Romania’s royal family. The castle’s stunning architecture, with its intricate woodwork, stained glass, and lavish rooms, is complemented by its picturesque setting. Peleș Castle is also notable for being the first castle in the world to be powered by electricity generated locally. It’s a perfect day trip from Brașov, offering visitors a glimpse into Romania’s royal past.

Located in Bucharest, the Palace of Parliament is the second-largest administrative building in the world, after the Pentagon. This colossal structure was conceived by Nicolae Ceaușescu during his communist reign. The palace’s construction, which involved the demolition of an entire neighborhood, resulted in one of the most expensive buildings ever built. It houses the Romanian Parliament, as well as museums and conference centers. While its history is controversial, it remains a significant part of Romania’s modern heritage.

Whether you’re interested in medieval history, royal castles, or unique underground wonders, Romania offers a rich tapestry of historical sites that will leave you captivated and wanting to explore more.

Romania’s heritage is a captivating time travel machine medieval citadels, Roman towns, royal estates each site a chapter waiting to be lived.
