Two of music’s most influential publications are teaming up to elevate culture and conversation. Rolling Stone and VIBE are officially joining forces, Billboard announced on Thursday, October 16th.
Under the partnership, VIBE will enhance Rolling Stone’s hip-hop and R&B presence while continuing to produce its own editorial and multimedia content. Plans include new collector’s print editions, long-form interviews, and cross-platform features spotlighting leading voices in music, fashion, and sports.
“We are thrilled to announce that VIBE is joining forces with Rolling Stone,” said Julian Holguin, CEO of Rolling Stone. “This historic team-up will enable Rolling Stone to level up the publication’s hip-hop and R&B coverage, allowing RS to dive deeper into the culture.” Holguin added that the collaboration will bring investment in VIBE’s video, podcast, and experiential projects while honoring its original mission to “power cultural conversations.”
Datwon Thomas, VIBE’s longtime editor-in-chief, will serve as Strategic Advisor to oversee the transition. “Coming back to VIBE in this role is deeply meaningful to me,” Thomas said. “The opportunity to help guide VIBE into the next phase of its growth and continued legacy is an honor.”
Sadly, several writers have been laid off during this transition, though the exact number is unclear. Writers have taken to Twitter to share the news and express disappointment about losing their positions as the publications prepare for this new chapter.
