NEW YORK, N.Y. (7News) — It was one of the weekend’s highly anticipated matches in the NWSL, with the rivalry between the Washington Spirit and Gotham FC on Saturday afternoon.
The Spirit controlled the ball for the majority of the game, but even when Gotham’s Geyse was given a red card in the 30th minute and subsequently ejected, Washington could not take advantage and left with a 1-1 draw.
“I think we had chances in the first half and also second half out of situations where we were close, but we couldn’t; and we need to learn also how to face those situations,” head coach Adrián González said.
“I think we honestly need to be a little more creative,” midfielder Hal Hershfelt said. “I feel like sometimes we were just lobbing balls into the box, and I don’t think we’ve been super strong in our aerial presence these days.”
“That comes with time. I feel like that’s something that we can work on, and it’s been something that we’ve needed to work on, so it’s a wake-up call,” she added.
Goalkeeper Aubrey Kingsbury posted her 42nd career regular-season shutout, tying her with Casey Murphy for 4th in league history.
The Spirit will be back at Audi Field next weekend for a Friday Night Fútbol matchup with Racing Louisville FC. The match will kick off at 8 p.m.
