Students urged to believe in themselves and seize the opportunities created for them
Students in universities and tertiary institutions have been challenged to rise above their circumstances and take charge of their destinies.
Speaking during the Careers Day and Industry Expo at Garissa National Polytechnic, where he was the chief guest, Garissa County Commissioner Mohamed Mwabudzo emphasised that background should never define one’s future.
He urged students to believe in themselves and seize the opportunities created for them.
“Some of you may come from humble backgrounds. Some of you may face financial challenges. Some of you may doubt whether your dreams are possible. But let me remind you, your background does not determine your future. Your determination does,” he said.
Mwabudzo underscored that while the government works to create opportunities for young people, it is ultimately up to them to take the initiative and make the most of those openings.
“The certificate you earn here is not just paper — it is proof that you are capable. But your courage, your resilience, and your work ethic will determine how far you go,” he added.
“Success does not begin big. It begins brave. A hospitality student can start a small catering service for local events. A carpentry student can begin by making simple furniture and gradually build a brand known for quality. A graduate in fashion and design can begin with one sewing machine and grow into a thriving tailoring business. Do not wait for perfect conditions or motivation. Start with what you have. Grow with what you learn and be consistent with what you have to do,” he added.
The Commissioner reassured residents of Garissa County that the national government remains steadfast in safeguarding peace and security, noting that stability is the cornerstone of meaningful development.
“As the National Government representative in this county, I want to assure you we are committed to maintaining peace and security because development cannot thrive without stability,” he said.
He further highlighted ongoing youth empowerment initiatives such as the NYOTA programme and the Hustler Fund, encouraging students to take full advantage of such opportunities to transform their lives.
He commended the leadership and staff of Garissa National Polytechnic for organising the Careers Day and Industry Expo, noting that the event would go a long way in opening doors for students by fostering partnerships between training institutions and industry players.
“May this Careers Day and Industry Expo help open doors for you. May it spark partnerships. May it ignite ambition, and may each one of you rise, not only to change your own life, but to transform Garissa County and our nation,” he said.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening collaboration between training institutions and industry.
