Fremantle teenager Murphy Reid’s price to win the AFL Rising Star award has been slashed even further after a weekend where he heaped more pressure on Adelaide’s Daniel Curtin and Brisbane’s Levi Ashcroft.
Reid was hugely impactful for the Dockers in their thrilling victory over port Adelaide, kicking two goals and setting his teammates up for others.
The Victorian nailed a 50m set shot during the third term to end a run of three unanswered goals to the Power which had given them a 15-point lead. He then produced a piece of magic just six minutes later when he dribbled a goal through from the forward pocket to inspire his team.
But if that wasn’t enough to remind the Rising Star judges of his skill, Murphy’s quick hands were outstanding during then final term as he spotted Pat Voss nearby, flicked the ball over his head and the powerful Docker put Fremantle in front.
Respected AFL commentator Kane Cornes praised the Dockers for uncovering him at pick 17 in the draft, comparing him to Norm Smith medallist Steve Johnson.
“He was a good pick,” Cornes told SEN.
“There’s a bit of Stevie J about him. If you put him in the draft camp, there’s going to be nothing athletically in his profile that is going to light up in green. But get a football anywhere near him and he’s incredibly smart and clever.”
Reid’s price was in double figures midway through the season and Curtin was a raging hot favourite after having a month of huge performances on the wing for the Crows.
But Reid is now paying $3 while Curtin’s price has come back to $2. Ashcroft made another push during Brisbane’s loss to Sydney on Saturday. he had 27 disposals, seven clearances and kicked one goal. His price is $5.
Meanwhile, Curtin struggled against West Coast, collecting only eight possessions for the day.
The final two games of the season will now play a massive part in determining the winner. Reid and Ashcroft will be on the same field on Friday night as the Dockers and Lions play for what could be a top four spot.
