Red Cloud Community Schools: moving forward together

RED CLOUD, Neb. (KSNB) – Five months ago, Red Cloud Community Schools was a district in crisis. A child left alone on a bus. Leadership conflicts. Board resignations. A community divided.

But at the February school board meeting, something felt different.

New faces sat at the board table. A new superintendent greeted parents and staff. And the conversation – for the first time in months – centered on what brought everyone together in the first place: the students.

“We’re all after the same common goal,” Board President Jeff Armstrong said. “What’s best for kids? And that’s what we want to get to, and make sure they are successful when they leave our little town.”

The district’s transformation began in January with the hiring of Randy Gilson as interim superintendent. Gilson, who previously served as superintendent at Blair Community Schools and South Central Nebraska Unified School District No. 5, was already familiar with the area when the Red Cloud position opened.

“I was a superintendent in the area and was very familiar with [Red Cloud],” Gilson said. “It’s a phenomenal community that prides itself in education and there’s so much history and tradition. So it’s a great opportunity [to be] a part of what a community that, again, puts education first.”

Since mid-January, Gilson has taken a measured approach to his new role – one focused on listening rather than rushing to make changes.

“My goal, these next 90 days, is just to listen and learn,” Gilson said. “I’ve had a chance to be around the kids in elementary and high school a lot. We have tremendous kids here in Red Cloud. It’s just an opportunity to listen to teachers and parents in the community, and learn as much as I can about Red Cloud, and some of the goals and aspirations and passions that people have.”

But Gilson hasn’t been navigating Red Cloud alone. Armstrong has made it his mission to introduce the new superintendent to the heart of the community – its people.

“I’ve been taking him around,” Armstrong said. “My goal is once a week to take him to different people within our community. We went and had coffee with the guys, one week, coffee with the ladies the next, and then we’ve been to the hospital as well, just to get him out and about, and see people, and he’s been very receptive to that, and very easy to talk to.”

Those coffee meetings and hospital visits aren’t just social calls – they’re part of a broader vision for Red Cloud’s future. Armstrong said Gilson brings fresh perspective and new ideas, including career pathways and community partnerships.

“We’re just kind of excited to have Dr. Gilson there, you know, just see what different avenues he can look at,” Armstrong said. “He was really big into career pathways at Sandy Creek. We went and visited the hospital last week, so really excited about what we could do there.”

The board is expected to decide in the coming months whether to offer Gilson the permanent superintendent position.

The board itself has undergone significant changes. In January, two new members were appointed to fill vacancies left by resignations in December. Among them is Rachel Olsen, who says she’s been waiting for this opportunity.

“I feel very passionate about quality education, for not just my child, but for all of the students in the community,” Olsen said. “I’ve really been interested in becoming involved as a school board member for a long time. So I’m really excited about the opportunity to do so.”

Olsen says she’s focused on policies that support both teachers and students. And she’s impressed by what she’s already seen in Red Cloud – particularly the community’s resilience.

“What I really appreciate and admire about Red Cloud is the commitment to really not be afraid to evolve or change,” Olsen said. “I really appreciate the care that people demonstrate for each other, even in times when they don’t always see eye to eye.”

The board also reorganized its leadership in January. Board member Hannah Rupprecht now serves as vice president, working alongside Armstrong to guide the district forward.

Rupprecht said serving as vice president is “both an honor and a responsibility I will take very seriously.”

“This role requires balance – supporting Jeff as Board President, helping guide our board process, and ensuring we stay focused on strong policy and governance that strengthens our district,” Rupprecht wrote.

She said the board is now focused on long-term planning and “future-proofing rural education” in Red Cloud through strong fiscal responsibility, thoughtful planning, supporting teachers, and ensuring students have opportunities beyond their time in the district.

“Every board has defining seasons,” Rupprecht wrote. “This one has highlighted the importance of role clarity, thoughtful oversight, and steady leadership. What excites me is that we now have an opportunity to focus on long-term planning – ensuring our governance practices, financial decisions, and operational structures position Red Cloud well into the future.”

Rupprecht concluded with optimism: “I believe the foundation we’re building now will position us well for long-term stability, growth, and continued community pride. We have a lot to be excited about. The best days are ahead of us.”

The road hasn’t been easy for Red Cloud Community Schools. The district has faced serious challenges – from safety lapses to transparency concerns to internal conflicts that threatened to tear the community apart.

But as spring approaches, there’s a sense that Red Cloud has turned a new leaf.

Armstrong said the change in atmosphere was palpable.

“It’s hard to pinpoint just one thing,” Armstrong said. “You know, change is the only thing constant. So I think we got a really good guy.”

He added that he’s excited about Gilson’s ability to look at the district with fresh eyes.

“I’m kind of excited about Dr. Gilson coming in, and maybe being able to look at things from a different perspective a little bit from what we had, just that much more coming in to more experience, coming in to look at what we have, and see what we can do to improve upon what we already have,” Armstrong said.

The board is also working on practical improvements, including reviewing the district’s transportation contract and exploring partnerships with local businesses for student career opportunities.

After months of division, Red Cloud Community Schools is finding common ground. New leadership. New board members. And a renewed commitment to the students who are, after all, the reason everyone showed up in the first place.

The challenges haven’t been forgotten. The lessons learned from last fall’s difficulties continue to shape the district’s approach to governance, transparency, and accountability.

But this community has chosen to learn from those challenges, grow from them, and move forward together.

As Olsen observed, Red Cloud has demonstrated something important: the care people show for each other, even when they don’t always see eye to eye.

And in a small Nebraska town where education has always been a source of pride, that care – and that commitment to students – is what will carry Red Cloud Community Schools into the future.
