Racing couldn’t restart at the Tipperary venue until the ambulance had returned the the racecourse
Racing was delayed for half an hour at Clonmel on Thursday following a serious injury sustained by a jockey. An ambulance was required to transfer jockey Shane O’Callaghan to hospital following a nasty incident in the 2.
20 Monroe Maiden Hurdle. O’Callaghan’s mount Boston Fire slipped up after the third last hurdle in a race won by the Willie Mullins-trained and Patrick Mullins ridden King Of Aces. The 400-1 shot, trained by Peter Maher, slipped coming down the hill when well behind giving O’Callaghan no chance of keeping the partnership intact. Johnny Ward from Racing TV reported that O’Callaghan had suffered ‘quite a serious leg injury’ and racing was delayed as they awaited the return of the ambulance. The Lisronagh Handicap Hurdle was scheduled to begin at 2.50 but didn’t start until 3.20pm. O’Callaghan is a 5lbs claiming conditional rider from Keady in County Armagh and has ridden seven winners this season. Patrick Mullins was completing a double in his own colours having earlier won the Rathronan Maiden Hunters Chase on I Walked The Line. He now hopes the five-year-old can establish himself in that sphere and possibly become a contender for the Hunters Chase at Cheltenham in 2027 – a race he’s won in the past with Billaway. ‘We have been trying to replace Billaway and I had Cause For Comment last year who didn’t quite measure up, so I got this horse and I’m hoping to make him into a Billaway-type horse,” Mullins told Irishracing.com. ‘I’ll look to a winners’ of one hunters chase next and maybe aim him for the Ladies Cup at Punchestown then and afterwards to Stratford. Next year, as a six-year-old, I’d hope to work towards Cheltenham.’ Click here to sign up to our racing newsletter for the latest news and tips from the biggest meets .
