Pune: A cybercrook allegedly defrauded a 51-year-old professional employed with a private firm of Rs 16.5 lakh between July and Aug, promising high returns through share market investments. The victim lodged a complaint with the Dapodi police on Friday. The police said the complainant was browsing advertisements related to stock market opportunities when he was added to a WhatsApp group. “The group’s administrator appeared to offer guidance on trading strategies,” a Dapodi police officer said.Between July 7 and Aug 20, the victim was sent a link by one of the group members, who encouraged him to provide personal details for an IPO investment promising lucrative returns. The fraudster reportedly gained access to sensitive documents including the victim’s Aadhaar and PAN cards. Using this information, the accused allegedly siphoned off over Rs 16.5 lakh from the victim’s bank account, the police said, citing the complaint. MSID:: 124181291 413 |
